THE REV MR FERGUSSON’S SCHOOL.

The Rev Mr Fergusson’s annual picnic to his scholars and their friends took place on Thursday last. The s.s. Halcyon was specially chartered for the trip, and at 11 a.ra a gay party, including several visitors from Christchurch, took their departure in that vessel for Mr Stoddart’s estate, on the opposite side of the harbor. The party were most hospitably received at the new wharf by Mr and Mrs Stoddart and Mr Allen, who were indefatigable during the day to conduce to the happiness of their guests. _ After an hour or two’s wandering about, which the children and their elders appeared to enjoy most thoroughly, a splendid lunch, provided by Rev J. D. Fergusson, was spread upon the turf, under the shadow of some tall gum strees. It was a very merry meal, a plentiful supply of fruit finishing the repast. Amateur attendants soon cleared away the wreck, and the cool and gentle game of football was then indulged in by the youngsters and some of of their infatuated seniors, many of the elders looking at its conclusion as if they hadn’t done so much hard work for many a day. Races were then got up for the youngsters. The races for the school were for prizes that had been offered by the Rev J. D. Fergusson, while those for all comers were for money raised on the ground. Races were also run by some of the adults. Before parting ringing cheers were given for Mr and Mrs Stoddart, for their great kindness and hospitality during the day, and also to Mr and Mrs Fergusson for providing such a delightful fete. Thus concluded one of the most successful picnics ever held near port. During the week a careful examination of the scholars at Dalcroy House was held, and on Saturday, at 11 a.m., the Revs F. Pember and McGowan, Dr McDonald, and Mr H. R. Webb attended for the purpose of distributing the prizes.
