December 18th, to be succeeded in the afternoon by sports, and followed by an entertainment in the evening in aid of the funds for enlarging St Matthew's Church, Lyttelton Fire Police.—A meeting of the Lyttelton fire police took place on Wednesday night, at the Press office, Lyttelton. There was a fair attendance, and the rules of the Christchurch fire police were adopted, with some few alterations. Colonial Representatives.—The firing for the choice of representatives has been going on during the past week, and concluded on Wednesday. The result is hardly as satisfactory as could be wished, only one man, Sergeant Fox, of the Christchurch Artillery; having scored the requisite number of points. He made tho splendid score of 92. Fire at Boggy Creek.—A fire, which at one time threatened to be very destructive, broke out on Wednesday evening, about five o'clock, in tho store of Mr Salkeld, near to the creek at Doyle3ton. Fortunately, the residents in the neighbourhood mustered promptly and extinguished the flame, though not until serious damage had been done fo the internal fittings. The cau«p of the fire is unknown, and as Mr Salkeld uninsured the loss will be a heavy one. Canterbury Sale Yards Company A. meeting of the comrr.ittL'e of the above company was held yesterday at the offices?, Tattersall's, The secretary (Mr Pearse) submitted four tenders received for the privilege of supplying refreshments at the company's yards for the next three months. After consideration the tender of Mr Hiorns, of the Central Hotel, was accepted. An account passed for payment, and the meeting closed. The Opera.—The bill last evening comprised a uew operetta, " The Crimson Scarf," containing some very pretty music, in which Mr Vernon displayed histrionic powers of high order, the witch scene from "Macbeth," and the musical burlettaof 'The Waterman." In the latter too much praise cannot be given to the various characters, appearing as they do, under great disadvantage from having, perforce, to go out of their line. Miss Howe made a capital Wilhelmina, and sang the music nicely, especially oue or two introduced ballads. Mrs Levison as Mrs Bundle, was appropriately shrewish, and played excellently. Mr Vernon as Tom Tug, was good, and Mr Newton deserves credit for his really capital acting in the part of Robin. It was impossible to resist roaring with laughter at his grotesque antics and heavy melodramatic air. are pleased to welcome back again Miss Alice May, with, we hope, renewed health. She will appear as Arline in the " Bohemian Girl," and introduce Claribel's sweetly pretty ballad, " You and I." On Monday night Miss Alice May takes her farewell benefit, when Gounod's " Faust" will be produced. f'
