A steady heavy rain, which commenced at an early hour this morning, kept on increasing until at 11,30 it changed into a southerly buster. Very few people were at tho races About the time of ringing tho first bell four, stewards met and agreed to postpone the races till twelve to-morrow. There was intense dissatisfaction amongst tho people, who hooted the stewards. It is still raining, and the sky is much overcast. Wellington, December 4. Two gazettes extraordinary have been published to-day. The first announces that the Marquis of Normanby has assumed the administration ; the second proroguing the General Assembly to the Ist of March next. Flour has advanced 20s to 30s; oatmeal, £25 10s to £26; oats, 6s to 6s 3d; hams, Is 4d; bacon, Is 2d to Is 3d. Sailed yesterday—Hannah Barratt, schooner, for Wanganui. Wanganui, December 4. To-day 1000 sheep and 70 store cattle were sold ; ewes with lambs in wool, from 17s to 355; hoggetts, 16s 6d to 21s 6d ; seventy two-tooth Lincoln rams sold at £3 to £8 2s 6d ; an imported ram at £2l. Cattle—yearlings, £2 7s 6d ; two-year heifers, £3 7s Gd ; eighteen-month steers, £4 2s 6d ; bullocks, £5 ; cows, £5 2s Gd- The cattle were mostly bought for shipment. A good .many buyers were present, but there was little competition. The sheep did not realise satisfactory prices. Dunedin, December 4. Grain of all sorts firmer ; wheat, good to prime, 5s to 5s 6d ; oats scarce, and wanted at 5s Gd to 6s ; barley, 4s Gd to 5s 3d ; flour has advanced to £l3 to £l3 10s ; pollard, £G 10s ; bran, £5 10s.
