MADAME ARABELLA GODDARD'S CONCERT.
The third of this lady’s series of concerts was given to a good house last night. Perhaps the hall was hardly so crammed as it had been on the proceeding evenings, but the falling off in the attendance was not noticeable. Madame Goddard was received with enthusiastic applause on her coming forward to play the first solo—Beethoven’s “Moonlight sonata ” —and at its conclusion the hall rang with the plaudits of the audience. After playing the other pieces set down against her name in the programme, Madame Goddard was encored with such persistency that she was good-natured enough to give the audience the treat of hearing two additional pieces. Mr Eainford, too, was the victim of what may be termed the “ encore nuisance,” which the audiences in Christchurch seem to labor under to no small extent, and it really is rather too much to expect that every peformer shall respond to the vociferous plaudits bestowed on her, or him, by a fatiguing addition to the labors allotted to each member of the company. The remainder of the company were also received with warmth, and it appeared that their several performances found great favor with the audience, the applause being vigorous, and sustained, after each item had been given. To-night takes place the last of this series of concerts, and we expect to see the hall crowded to overflowing. To those who do not intend to go, we can only say that they are missing a chance which may, most probably will not, happen again to the residents of Canterbury ; and that they will regret in the future not having taken advantage of the present opportunity.
