The New Zealand Times, in a leader today, condemns Mr Williamson’s journey to England as an unnecessary expenditure of public money. He goes without the consent of the Government, and against their strong protest. The Times says that the Government refused to delegate the Superintendent’s powers to a Deputy Superintendent, and anticipates the stoppage of public business at Auckland should this intention be carried out, as the Government cannot, under the circumstances, come to the relief of the province. The Deputy-Superintendent by law has only the power to sign election writs. The Times hopes that the journey will not be undertaken. The Times also recommends the Government to introduce a Bill abolishing Provincial Institutions throughout the colony, as being the only way to stop the sacrifice of Crown land, and prevent direct taxation. Wellington, November 16. His Excellency was entertained at a farewell dinner by the members of the Wellington Club on Saturday evening. Sir George Arney and the Puisne Judges were present as quests. The New Zealand Times again strongly condemns the sale of the foreshore by the Provincial Government.
