MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, November 9. (Before C. C. Bowen, Esq., R.M., and W. H. Pilliet, Esq., J.P.) OBTAINING MONEY BY FALSE PRETENCES. Wm. J. M'llroy was charged* on remand with this offence. Mr Garrick appeared for the accused, and Mr Wynn Williams in support of the warrant. Mr Wynn Williams said that he had received a letter from Mr Martin, at Dunedin, in which that gentleman stated that Mr M'llroy was not his agent, and had no authority to receive money on his account. His Worship said that he had been in communication with the Resident Magistrate at Dunedin in this matter, and the warrant would have to take the usual course. Accused would be remanded to Dunedin to appear at the Resident Magistrate's Court there on Monday next at eleven o'clock. Bail would be granted in two sureties of £IOO each, and himself in £2OO. BREACH OF THE CITY BYE-LAWS. For permitting horses and cattle to wander, H. A. Dykes was fined 5s ; Cornelius Cuff, 5s ; Robt. M'Pherson, 5s ; J. G. Hart, 5s ; E. Buckridge, ss; J. H. Hart, 5s ; Henry Wright (three horses), 5s ; W. R. Smith, ss; Margaret Hemmell, ss; H. Knight, ss; and Saml. Durham, ss. John M'Court, summoned for riding on the footpath, was fined ss. For driving cattle through the streets during prohibited hours. Chas. Peagram was fined 10s. Edward Grey and Wm. Bartling, two boys, charged with letting off fireworks on the evening of the 31st October, fn St. Asaph street, were each fined 5s and expense of witnesses. Wm. Chisnall, summoned for obstructing a public thoroughfare, was fined ss; and Joseph Kington, for a similar offence, was also fined ss. For permitting his chimney to catch on fire, Wm. Garrard was fined 10s. C. P. Milne, summoned for permitting a ferocious dog to wander at large unmuzzled, was fined 10s and expenses of witnesses. Henry Gourlay, summoned for being absent from his horse and trap, was fined iOs. The adjourned case against James Goss for neglecting to keep a Tight burning over a hoarding in High street was called on, and the offence being admitted, defendant was fined 10s. For tethering a horse in a public thoroughfare George Steele was fined ss. USING OBSCENE LANGUAGE. John Kitchen was charged with using obscene language in a* public street on the 28th October. The evidence did not prove that obscene language had been used, and the case was dismissed. FISHING IN THE AVON. Henry Bassington and John Hickling were summoned for fishing with rod and line in the Avon near the cemetery. Constable Haddrell stated that he saw the defendants fishing one evening in the river near the cemetery. There were no hooks on the lines, and the men seemed only to be bobbing for eels. His Worship said that trout could not be caught without hooks, and the Act was not intended to prevent persons from bobbing for eels, Case dismissed. USING ABUSIVE LANGUAGE. Joel Reed was charged with using abusive language to Thomas Bristall. The language complained of had been used after complainant had impounded some cattle belonging to defendant- Fined 20s. VIOLENT ASSAULT. Wm. Fabling, summoned for assaulting William Gregory on the sth November, did not appear when called, and his Worship
ordered a warrant to be issued for his apprehension. VAGRANCY. William Duncan was charged with this offence. The prisoner had gone into four shops in Colombo street on last Saturday and represented himself as a Freemason in one instance, as a chemist in another, a confectioner in a third, and an engineer and fitter in a fourth. In each of these places he had asked for assistance, and was muddled with drink at the time. Prisoner in defence said he left the hospital about a fortnight ago, and was endeavoring to obtain assistance to leave the town. Sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment with hard labour. DRUNK AND DISORDERLY. Frederick Beach, for drunkenness, was fined 10s or twenty - four hours. Ellen Thompson and Flora Martin, very old offenders, arrested for drunkenness; the latter also charged with using obsence language, were each sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labor, as vagrants. John Johnston, for being drunk was fined 10s, Joseph Burns, ss; and Henry Hassett, 20s, or 48 hours. Phoebe Miller, arrested drunk in a garden in Manchester street on Saturday was charged with vagrancy, and sentenced to three months's imprisonment, with hard labor. DRUNK AND RESISTING THE POLICE. Evan Evans, arrested for drunkenness on Sunday, resisting the police, and damaging the constable's tunic, was fined 40s, or 96 hours' in default. OBTAINING MONEY BY FALSE PRETENCES. Margaret B. Todd was charged on remand with this offence. The evidence showed that prisoner had obtained £3 2s 9d from George Brown, boarding house keeper, Madras street, and lodging, by stating that she had a farm at Templeton, and had come to town to see Dr Prins. The prisoner had said she had three tons of Tpotatoes and some sides of bacon, which she offered the prosecutor in lieu of money for her board. After staying at the boardinghouse for seven weeks she suddenly left and did not return. Previous to leaving she showed prosecutor's wife a P. 0. order for £l5O, and a cheque on the Bank of New Zealand for £l7O, which she said she intended to cash. Evidence was also given that the prisoner never had an account at the Bank of New Zealand nor at the Post Office Savings Bank. Detective Feast stated that the prisoner had been previously convicted for a similar offence, and was making a living by obtaining goods and money by false pretences. His Worship sentenced the prisoner to 12 months' imprisonment with hard labor as a vagrant. Civil Case, boullat v. mcilroy. This was a claim for £34 for loss of passage to the Palmer River diggings. This case was similar in its nature to the previous cases decided last week ; and after hearing evidence his Worship gave judgment for £24 and costs. This judgment decided two other cases for a similar amount against the same defendant. LYTTELTON. Saturday, November 7. [Before W. Donald, Esq, R.M.] DRUNK AND DISORDERLY. Ann Jordan, arrested by Constable McGuire, was fined ss, or 24 hours' imprisonment. ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE. Joel Moore, of the barque Syren, was ordered on board his vessel. VAGRANCY. Peter Ellande, on remand from medical treatment, was dismissed with a caution. ASHBURTON. Thursday, November 5. | Before Alfred Saunders and H. T. Winter, Esqs, J.P.] DRUNK AND INCAPABLE. Philip Parker was charged with being drunk on November 4th. FiDed 10s. ASSAULT. George Pike was charged by Joseph Richaidson with assaulting him on October 29th. Offence admitted. Fined 10s, costs 7s 6d. ASSAULT. Joseph Richardson was charged with assaulting Phcebe Pike on October 29th. Case dismissed. USING ABUSIVE LANGUAGE. Joseph Richardson was charged with using abusive language to Phcebe Pike on October 29th. Case dismissed. CRUELTY TO ANIMALS. Thomas Munyard, charged on an adjourned information with cruelty to a horse. After hearing further evidence the Bench fined defendant ss, costs 10s.
