SPORTING.

('From the Press.’) ~ ?Jedgingjfrom tbe number of entries published in Monday’s paper, the coming Metro politan meeting promises to be an exceedingly' successful'one.lt “is true that' in point of quality wo are scarcely up to the usual mark; butthe fields, with the exception of the Hurdle Race and the Railway Plate, have filled well, and the racing bids fair to be more open in almost every-event than has been seen here for the last three or four seasons. Commencing with the Free Handicap, Tamburini appears at 9st; and he, considering his other engagements, being a very doubtful acceptor, Yatterina will probably start at top weight of 9st, the rest being raised in proportion, according to clause 54 of the CJ.O. rules. Templeton, Traitor, Wainui, Batter, Meteor, Hercules, Tadmor, Sonnambula, Ada gelding. Rangi, Remnant, the Emmeline colt, the Zigzag colt, Belle, and Elfin King having other engagements, are also doubtful starters ; but on looking over the handicap, and assuming that any of them accept, I should fancy Yatterina, Parawhenua, and Remnant ought to be there or thereabouts ; but it is next to useless to give an opinion until the acceptances appear The next event is the Derby, with eleven acceptors, which is not only a very capital field, but shows that whatever the touts may imagine, at all events the owners have some confidence in their respective horses. I cannot look upon this ; race as the certainty for Wainui that has up to the present time been considered, as I think Hercules, the Ada colt, and Sonnambula are very dangerous representatives of their respective gtab’es ; and if the latter come sound to the post I shall certainly look no farther for the winner. For the C.J.C. there are six acceptances, and of these I thin* the weight will prove too much for Tamburini; and Traitor, notwithstanding his light impost, and the favorable opinion that I have frequently heard expressed of him, I cannot stand for more than second honors. Unless the Emmeline colt is vastly improved since his Champagne perfoimance, he is not good enough to meet either Traitor or Templeton under the weights. The same remark applies to the Zigzag colt and to Batter. The latter is a good useful little mare, but from her perfoimacces I cannot think her good enough to

concede 31b to Templeton. Under the cir cumstances I shall plump unhesitatingly for the game little son of Belle of the Isle. The Railway Plate only brings two entries, and if their two-year-old performances can be taken as a line, Wainui holds Elfin King pretty safe. There are six entries for the Maiden, all three-year-olds. The majority of these being engaged in the Derby, their running in that race may possibly be somewhat of a guide to this. At present the race appears to lie between Remnant, the Ada colt, and Ngaro, the latter for choice. For the Cup there are seven acceptors, and in the absence of Lurline and Co it promises to be the most open Cup that I have seen for some time. Almost every horse has supporters. There are four three-year-olds engaged in this race. Of these three will have previously performed in the Derby, namely, Wainui, Sonnambula and Hercules. Any one of them winning the one race ought to have a good chance for the other, but as Toi has been reserved by her owner specially for this event, I shall be inclined to prefer her to the other three-year-olds. As Ido not fancy Traitor with 7st lOlbs upon him in the Handicap it is needless to say I cannot see him “ a good thing” at weight for age with such a performer as Tamburini. Templeton will undoubtedly run a good horse for this race, and I think the cup will lie between the three of them, but at present ray selection is certainly Tamburini. The Lottery Plate is unusually well filled. In a short flutter like this when so much depends upon the getting away, an uncertain starter like Yatterina is a very dangerous mare either to back or lay against. As Batter has never to ray knowledge performed in the sprint business, and there are six three-year-old in it, it, is a very open affair. The Grand Stand Handicap, the Metropolitan Handicap, and the Christchurch Plate, are matters for future consideration. The Hurdle Race has only two entries, namely, Alice Grey and Theodore, and according to their respective performances at Geraldine, it appears to be a moral certainty for Theodore. I shall give your readers my final tip on Monday.

The Greymouth and Auckland programmes are to hand, the former of which comprises £2OO, £125, and a £SO Handicap ; also a £6O and £SO Hurdle Race. These races come off on the 17th and 18th of March, 1875, and the nominations for the Greymouth Jockey Club Handicap close on the 22nd December, 1874. Such a liberal programme ought undoubtedly to entice fair fields of horses. The Auckland programme is also an exceedingly liberal bill of fare, comprising three £IOO handicaps, and one £2OO, and a £IOO weight for age, besides numerous other capitalevents. SIN BAD. The following are the weights for the Free Handicap and Hurdle Race. FREE HANDICAP.
