SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

LYTTELTON. A meeting of this committee was held on Saturday night last, at the Colonists' Hall. Present : Mr H. B. Webb (in the chair) Drs Donald and Rouse, Messrs Nalder, Allwright, Grange, and Hawkins. The minutes of the last meeting, held on October 12th, were read and confirmed. A letter was read from the Board, sanctioning Miss Stansell's appointment, subject to her passing the examination. A copy of a letter sent to the Board of Education by the chairman, enclosing annual report and abstract of balance Bheet, and telling them of his election as chairman of committee, was then read and approved of. The chairman stated he had been presented with a certificate by Messrs Nees and Co, from Mr Armson, asking for payment of £l5O on account of their contract for school jurniture. A long discussion ensued, in which all the members took part, and eventually it was moved—" That the committee having been presented with architect's certificate for an advance on contract for furniture of £l5O on account, draw the Board's attention to the following:—A. The certificate was given without the architect's previous personal examination. B. The committee consider that in many particulars the furniture is not according to specification, and generally in a most unsatisfactory condition. C. Under the above circumstances the committee consider themselves bound to invite the Board's opinion before endorsing the certificate, that the Board may take such action as they may deem advisable." This was put and carried. A discussion then took place about communicating the matter immediately to the Board, and it was resolved that none of the furniture should be screwed down till an answer had been received from the Board. The matter of procuring a bell was then discussed, and it was resolved that the chairman be instructed to purchase a suitable bell. Besolved that tenders be at once called for dwarf wall and custodian's house, The committee then adjourned. KAIAPOI. The first meeting of the newly-elected borough school committee was held on Friday evening. Present —Messrs Mellish, Johnston, Beswick, Pashby, Lock, Kerr, Macfarlane, Bers Willock and Bavin. Mr Kerr was elected chairman. It was resolved that the Board of Education be requested to sanction the appointment of a secretary at a salary of £2O per annum. Accounts amounting to £976 13s 6d were passed for payment. A telegram from Mr Rayner, Temuka, was read, enquiring when the committee would expect him to commence his duties as head master. It was decided to reply to Mr Rayner that he was expected to take charge of the school within a month if possible. A letter was received from the Board of Education, sanctioning appointment of pupil teachers, and stating the recommendations relating to proposed teaching staff had been referred to the inspector for his report thereon ; also acknowledging the receipt of letter forwarding a list of the new committee elected on Monday evening, at the annual meeting. A return of apparatus required for the school was handed in. A certificate from Mr F. Strouts, passing No. 1 contract of Prudhoe and Cooper for the school building, and stating that with the exception of the vane on the bell-tower the work was completed, was handed in. He reported that the cost of a lightning conductor would be £6. It was resolved that the Board be requested to authorise the latter expenditure. The meeting then adjourned.
