SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
KAIAPOI, The ordinary meeting of the borough school committee was held on Friday evening. Present—Messrs. Kerr (chairman, j)ro tern .), Young, Pashby, Macfarlane, Revs Willock and Bavin. Leave of absence was granted to the chairman, Dr Dudley, and Mr Johnstone. Letters were read— From the architect, Mr Strouts, referring to tenders for furniture. From Mrs Wake, resigning as mistress on account of ill-health. From the hon sec of the choral class, asking for the use of one of the rooms one evening a week for musical practice. The consideration of this letter was deferred. From the provincial auditor, reporting on the state of the accounts, which he found quite correct. The report of the sub-committee appointed to consider the question of the teaching staff and salaries to be paid, involving a total annual expenditure of £lOlO, was brought up, but its consideration was deferred. It was resolved that Miss Johnston, on r > of the English teachers, be appointed bead mistress. having been recommended by the Board of Education and the inspector. Holidays were authorised from September 25ih to October sth. It was decided that three months’ formal notice be given to the present teaching staff, pending the rearrangements to he made under a head master. It was resolved that the new school be insured for £3OOO with the New Zealand, London and Globe, and Norwich Insurance Companies. The chairman was requested to have prepared an annual report to be submitted for approval at next meeting. RA.NGIORA, This committee met on Friday evening last. Present —Messrs A. H. Cunningham, J. Bell, J. Johnston, S. Stephens, and R, Aherne. The following correspondence was read : From the Board of Education, sanctioning: the appointment of Miss Robinson as pupil teacher of the second year, and Miss Heath of the first year, and other matters of detail connected with the accounts for fencing. The chairman (Mr Cunningham) reported having had the accounts audited by the Provincial Auditor as arranged, and certified to their having proved correct, with one exception, which showed that a payment from the Treasury had not been received by the Bank. It being stated that the children had no accommodation during the dinner hour in wet weather, it was moved by Mr Aherne, seconded by Mr Stephens, and carried —
“ That the teachers be instructed to allow the schoolrooms to remain open during the midday recess, and that at least, one of the teachers remain in charge of each room when the weather prevents the children leaving it.” In consequence of the foregoing resolution being adopted, the consideration of seating the verandahs was deferred The architect’s plan of the proposed platform for the infant class, in lieu of forms, was also deferred till a future meeting. It was resolved that Thursday and Friday, the Ist and 2nd of October, be granted as holidays. Tenders for the erection of the mistress’s cottage were then opened, and it was resolved that both, being in excess of the amount sanctioned by the Board, should be declined, and the architect be requested to modify the plan, to bring it within the specified amount. It was also resolved to call for fresh tenders as soon as this was done. Accounts amounting to £ls 12s lOd were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
