THIS DAY'S TELEGRAMS.

InVjJRCAKGILL, September 18. Mr Cuthbertson xddressed his constituents last night. After detailing the work of the session, he entered into the question of the abolition of the Northern provinces, explaining to his audience that they knew something by experience of the working of provincial institutions under adverse circumstances, and could judge whether the continuance of impecunious provinces in the North would be beneficial either to the colony, or to the outlying districts of these provirccs themselves. The pairot cry of " The Middle Island land fund in danger " would not impose upon his constituency, who could see there was no connection between the two things. It was a cry, as a desperate expedient, for the purpose of enlisting the sympathies of the south. After Mr Cuthbertson's address, a motion was proposed thanking him, but regretting his action in supporting the Government resolution. The motion met with no support, and an amendment was proposed expressing the cordial confidence of the constituency in Mr Cuthbertson. This amendment was carried on a show of hands, with only five dissentients. Port Chalmers, September 18. The contract was signed to-day. The following are the tenders: —Hawkins & Co, £41,542, informal ; IHtrachan, £47,968, accepted; W. P. Pearce, £51,000 ; D. Proudfoot, £53,000 ; J. and N.
