LYTTELTON. A meeting of this committee was held in the Colonists’ Hall on Friday evening. Present Mr H. R. Webb (chairman), Dr Donald, Messrs Nalder, Dr Rouse, Allwright, Hawkins, Wood, Grange, and Rich (hon sec). The minutes of last meeting having been read and confirmed, accounts were passed amounting to £lO 3s Bd. Applications were then opened for the office of head master. The chairman read letters and testimonials from nine applicants. The committee selected one for approval of the Board of Education. The chairman then read a special report on the schools from Mr Rested, the Government Inspector, and it was considered highly satisfactory.
A letter was read from the Board of Education re teachers’ salaries, informing the committee that they had henceforward to pay teachers’ salaries monthly, from moneys in hand, and not quarterly, as heretofore. The chairman was instructed to procure pipes for drainage. Captain Woods asked on what conditions children from the Heathcote Valley could attend the borough school. Considering the lateness of the hour, this and other important mat tors wore deferred till Saturday, at 4 p.m. The adjourned meeting is to be held in the new school. The chairman was requested to ask the architect and builder to be present. We understand that it is intended to open the new schools during the present month. On Saturday the members of the committee proceeded to the new buildings, but found that neither architect nor builder was present, so were obliged to defer the meeting. KAIAPOI.
