WEST CHRISTCHURCH SCHOOLS TREAT.

The first annual treat to the children attending the schools in the West Christchurch district took place at the new school, Lincoln road. At one Q’clock, the Durham street and Addington scholars felMn at their respective schools, and were marched to the temporary Lincoln road school, where the scholars of that school had been paraded to receive them. ;; All the children then proceeded in order to the new school, inarching round the ground, and then assembling "in the large room to complete the ceremony, pf formally taking possession. The' girls : ahd boys Afterwards dispersed to their playgrounds, where games and sports were indulged in* the winners receiving toys, knives, &c.. as prizes. At half-past three the lower class boys and girls assembled in the school for tea, where a plentiful .supply of good things awaited 'hem; after which, relays were laid for the cider children., When all were satisfied, the •bctffl and-girls to the number of 740, were paraded in the school ground, and inspected by the members of - the committee, and then returned to the schoolroom to receive their - prizes, : consisting principally of books—-some of them very handsome —which were distributed by Mr H. Ji Tancred, chairman of the committee. During the afternoon the band of the Lyttelton Orphanage, under Captain Giraud, added to the liveliness of the proceedings by playing several airs, their efforts to please being highly appreciated, The following is the prize list :

[We were unable to obtain the awards made to the girls. - ) After the prizes had been distributed, ! the children were relegated with lollies, and giving three cheers, they dispersed to their homes to enjoy their holidays, whi'. h terminate on the 6th September. At the invitation of the committee the teachers partook of an elegant repast, laid out in one of the small rooms, when Mr J. G. Hawkes thanked the teachers on behalf of the committee for the trouble they had taken throughout the day, which had resulted in all the arrangements being carried out to complete success. The Rev Mr Gumming replied on behalf of the teachers, and trusted the members present would convey to the remainder of the committee their warmest thanks for the kindly and courteous treatment they have invariably received at the hands of the West Christchurch committee. .This, brought the day’s proceedings to a close.
