House met, Mr Jones, member for Ballarat, tabled a direct want of confidence motion declaring that the reconstruction of the Ministry is unsatisfactory. All business was thereupon suspended until Tuesday, when the motion was brought forward and several objections urged against the Ministry, especially as regards their position with reference to the Reform Bill, and practically abolishing the office of Chief Secretary. After several members had spoken the debate was adjourned, but there is no idea that the motion will be carried ; it being regarded as inopportune. The Treasurer and SolicitorGeneral have been re-elected without opposition. Postmaster-General is opposed. M'Culloch’s Royal Water won the Waterloo Coursing Cup. Warwick, the judge, returned to England by the mail steamer yesterday. A further railway extension of twentynine miles to Beaufort has been opened. For the Melbourne cup, Mr Redwood’s horses, especially Papapa, are fancied. Peera left yesterday by the Suez route. A Ladies’ Presbyterian College is about being built ; Oamaru stone is to be used. Mr Henry Rawden of the firm of W. P. White and Co, died rather suddenly yesterday. He was for many years connected with the Press, Dr Hearn has been re-elected Warden of the University senate. COMMERCIAL. Flour is firmer and selling more freely ; oats arc in better sale at Is 9d to 5s 3d. A telegram from Mauritius states that the new sugar is not expected to be ready for shipment before the beginning of September. The Torres Straits mail steamer brings 7000 packages of teas. The markets generally arc very dull with ordinary trade sales. Sydney. The ship Rooparclle, from Auckland, was towed into Newcastle last night. INTERPROYINCIAL. Auckland, August 18. Meetings at Otahuhu .and Newmarket, have passed resolutions condemning Mr Vogel's resolutions for the abolition of the provinces of the North Island unless the Government abolish the South Island provinces also. The Newmarket meeting also passed a resolution that the laud fund should be Colonial Revenue. Grahamstown, August 18. The Star's correspondent at Whekatiwai gives the following quantities of food distributed by the Ngatipapa to their guests at the meeting now on :—59 tons of flour, 7 tons sugar. 1000 kits potatoes, 5000 dried sharks, 77 large pigs, 16 head cattle, 1 dozen boxes of tea, 2 large boxes of tobacco ; besides which they presented the Ngatianaru with a largecanoe and live merespounamous, The talk at the native meeting has commenced, but is not likely to lead to any importan f result. A requisition is being signed, asking the Mayor to convene a public meeting rc the abolition of the provinces. The Advertiser strongly supports the scheme, and ridicules the agitation by the proviucialists in Auckland city. It says they do not represent the opinion of the majority of the province, and that the people will not be led away by false party cries. Tauranga, August 18.
The bones of Bawiri, the great Tauranga rebel, were disinterred lately, and buried today in the church cemetery, next to Colonel Booth’s grave, who fought against him. He was followed to the grave by 300 native pall-bearers, old European settlers, and the leading citizens, who respected the old warrior for his very brave and merciful conduct to the European women and children in the hour of need.
Wellington, August 17. The Omco brought a fine chestnut colt, Gladiator, by the celebrated Gladiateur, winner of the Derby, St Leger, &c., out of Nuncia by Nuncio, out of Fatima, by Elis ; for Mr John Shield of Wanganui. Gladiator was imported from England by John Moffat of Victoria, and purchased as a yearling for 450 guineas. Mr Nancarrow has made an official surrey of the boilers of the Omeo this afternoon. The result is not yet known.

Invercargill. Aug. 11). About 100 persons attended a public meeting on Monday night, to give their expression of opinion regarding Sir _F, I). Bell’s statement before the Waste Lands Committee of Assembly. It was resolved that he oppose I the sale of land on deferred payments on behalf of runholders; and a public resolution was passed that his statement was unauthorised, and that the attitude assumed by the runholders of the district, as shown in the recent opposition to opening the land by runs on deferred payments, and that the action of their representative (Bell) when in Wellington, was inimical to the best interests of the country, as opposing the progress of the settlement of lauds by a population of ha an file settlers. Thanks wore voted to Mr Donald Reid. M.H.R., forgiving timely warning of Sir F. I). Bell’s statement. Wellington, August 11). The Omco’s boilers are all right. The certificate having lapsed, and being too pressed for time to wait for a fresh one at Melbourne, six pounds were taken off her boilers there. She sailed for Melbourne via West Coast at 8.150 last night.
