ROAD BOARDS.

LINCOLN

A meeting of this Board was held at the office, Prebbleton, on Thursday, the Gth inst. Present —Messrs Tosswill (chairman) Knight, Marchant, Leadley, Maskrey. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed. The surveyor read his report, which was considered.

Tenders were opened, and one accepted, for the formation of 88 chains, more or less, of the Prebbleton and Waimakariri road.

In reply to a letter from Mr Gartrell, relative to the clearing of Dawson's creek, the surveyor was instructed to inform him that the matter complained of would be rectified at once.

In answer to a letter from Mr George Page, The Board decided to place .a cart bridge at the point of intersection of Townshend's drain with the Tancred and Halswell road.

The following correspondence from the Secretary for Public Works was read —Ist. Informing the Board that the sum of £947 10s, being the first instalment of the Provincial Government grant, has been lodged to the credit of the Board. 2nd. Informing the Board that the sum ot £3700 has been allotted to the Board for general purposes. In reply to a letter from the Secretary for Public Works respecting the erection of sod huts in the district for the use of immigrants, the surveyor was directed to reply that the Board does not see its way to employ more immigrants upon the roads at the present time. A letter was read from the chairman of committee of Chairmen of Road Boards, containing opinion of Attorney-General in the case of Ellesmere Road Board v. Fisher, and requesting suggestions from the Board as to any alterations in the present Roads Ordinance. The Board decided to call for tenders for claying that portion of the Ellesmere road by Dawson's, through the Sand-bills; also for forming 200 chains more or less of the same road, commencing at Ladbrooke's road, and running southerly to the Ellesmere junction road ; also, that portion of the Halswell road, by Ladbrooke's,"commencingat Shand's road, and running to meet Urquhart's contract, near the N.E. corner of reserve 214.

Public notice having been given to the occupiers of land in the district to clear the gorse fronting upon roads adjoining their respective properties, it was resolved that the surveyor be authorised where necessary for the construction of roads, without further notice, to cause the same to be done at the occupiers' expense,

The pay-sheet, amounting to £429 3s 2d, was passed for payment. The Board then proceeded to discuss the clauses of the Roads Ordinance seriatim, for the purpose of suggesting amendments, after which the Board adjourned until Thursday, September 3rd, at 2.30 p.m.

EYRETON.

The usual meeting of this Board was held on Monday last. Present —Messrs Dixon (chairman), Bradley, Coup, Dailey, and Wilson. The following correspondence was read : From the Secretary for Public Works, wishing to know what house accommodation was available for immigrants, and also offering to contribute £lO each towards the erection of huts. The clerk was directed to reply that there was no house accommodation, and the Board did not recommend the building of sod huts, but that six four-roomed cottages ought to be built on reserves in the district, the Board undertaking to give employment to the immigrants. From the Secretary for Public Works, stating that £2368 had been allocated to the Board of the Provincial Council. From the Provincial Treasurer advising payment of £592 to the credit of the Board.

From the under secretary, stating that £2OO had been allotted to the Board from the General Government grant. Ifrom the Hon Minister for Public Works, in reply to the Board's letter referring to the Eyreton railway. From the Provincial Secretary, requesting a copy of the rate roll to be furnished to the collector of the Eyreton educational district. From Mr Bridge, chairman Ellesmere Road Board, enclosing the opinion of the At-torney-General re Ellesmere Road Board v Fisher. From Mandeville and Rangiora Road Board, asking if the Board would contribute half the cost of obtaining 400 maps of the district. It was decided to contribute £lO towards the cost of 100 copies for each Board. From the same Board requesting that the approach to the drain bridge should be lengthened and shingled. The clerk was directed to reply that the £25 voted by the Board to supplement the Government grant of £250 was to cover the total cost of the work. From Mr J. Clark, Kaiapoi Island, agreeing to plough Wyatt's road. From Mr J. Armstrong, asking to have road through section 275 surveyed. From Mr C. Brown, Kaiapoi Island, for remission of rate. Agreed to. From Mr G. Patterson, Kaiapoi Island, asking to have the rate charged to him in excess allowed. Agreed to. From Mr P. C. Threlkeld and others, asking to have Jackson's road metalled. Agreed to. From Mr George Bailey and others, desiring the Board to undertake protective works at Eyre bridge, and unless the same was done declining to contribute towards works lower down. The surveyor was instructed to make arrangements with the owners of the land, the Board to pay 4d per yard, being half cost of the work. Mr attended, and desired that more provision be made to take the Eyre flood water. Messrs Wilson and Coup, it was arranged, should attend to the matter. Mr Rice attended, and stated his price for land for a road fronting Grigg's drain was £7O. The Board offered £6O, which was accepted, on condition that Mr Rice be allowed to fence across the road till the fencing along his section was put up. An application for a remission of rates overcharged to Mr Rice on twelve acres was agreed to. Mr Threlkeld made an offer to put in drain pipes across Oxford and Ohoka road, if the Board would supply them. He also offered £2 10s towards forming part of the tramroad.

These matters were agreed to. The surveyor's report was read and considered, and he was directed to invite tenders for a number of works. It was resolved that Messrs Threlkeld, Ross, Chilton, Atkinson, Clark, Gardiner, and the members of the Board meet at the Kaikainui hotel, Kaiapoi, to assess the property in the district for the rate roll of 1875. Accounts amounting to £348 Os 5d were passed, and the Board adjourned. AKAROA AND WAINUI. At a meeting of this Board, held at the Road Board office, Akaroa, on Saturday last, the Bth instant, all the members being present. The following conespondence was received, read, and considered : From the Secretary for Public "Works, relative to the disputed boundary line of the old Okain's Bay road on Robinsou's Bay Flat, and|with reference thereto the Board resolved that the Government be requested to have the disputed lines of road resurveyed and definitely fixed. From the Secretary for Public Works, advising the Board that the Government would grant the sum of £lO towards the construction of each hut erected for the use of immigrants, the huts to be erected on Government reserves. The clerk was instructed to inquire what power the Government proposed to place in the hands of the Board with regard to the occupancy of the huts when built. From E. C. Nalder, preferring a claim of £lO against the Board on behalf of Mous. Malmanche, for damage to section of land on German Bay Hill main road, by the removal of metal therefrom. It was resolved that if Mons. Malmanche will define the boundary line of section referred to, and it appears that the land has been encroached on, the Board will pay the amount claimed. Mr Rodriques applied for permission to open the ground for the purpose of constructing a covered drain across Jollie street. The matter was referred to the superintendent of works. Tenders were received from W. McKay for benching road at Wainui, and from A. Rhodes for clearing bush from Flea Bay Track, were rejected as excessive. The clerk was instructed to call for tenders for metalling main ro:id on German Bay Hill side, at twenty-two yards to the chain. Accounts and labor to the amount of £7t» 2s 8d were passed for payment, and the meeting then aajourned,
