BOROUGH COUNCIL.

KAIAPOI. Tuesday, August 11.

The ordinary meeting of this Council was held on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor, Crs Blackwell, Milsom, Wearing, Taylor, Parnham, and Funston. A. letter was read from the Manager of the New Zealand telegraph department, in reply to the letter from the Council, asking to have the telegraph poles painted, stating he regretted that it was not convenient to paint them, but that there would be no objection to the council doing it. The Mayor said he understood that if the department painted the poles in Kaiapoi, it would have to paint them in other towns. Cr Blackwell was of opinion that the poles should not be placed one and two feet into the footpaths unless they were painted. A letter was read from Mr Joynt, solicitor for Belcher and Fairweather, stating that a second transfer of their interest in river reserve sections had been made to Saunders and Henderson, and asking the approval of the Council,

Cr Blackwell moved, Cr Taylor seconded—- " That the transfer be agreed to on the usual terms." Carried. A letter was read from the foreman of works, thanking the Council for its handsome gratuity of £5 passed to him at last meeting. Crs Blackwell and Taylor drew attention to a nuisance from a stagnant creek on Mr Beswick's property, between Hilton and Raven streets. Referred to the sanitary committee.

Cr Wearing moved, Cr Milsom seconded—- " That Cr Funston be appointed a member a member and chairman of the sanitary committee in'the place of Mr Craig." Agreed to. The balance sheet, laid on the table, showed the receipts for the fortnight to have been —From rates —£19 18s ; and Provincial Government grant, £125 ; the credit balance in the bank being £271 19s 3d. Cr Parnham moved, Cr Taylor seconded — " That the accounts for carting—J. Veysey, £1 4s 9d : B. Smith, £1 2s ; J. Harper, £3 lis 6d ; for labor—A. Cameron, £3 3s; R. Taylor, £3 3s ; foreman, £4 ; and town clerk's salary, £5 3s 9d; total, £2l Bs, be passed." Carried. Tenders were opened for a footpath along the North road, and supply of 200 yards of metal, and accepted at £9, and 2s 3d per yard. The Council then adjourned.
