SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
WEST CHRISTCHURCH EDUCATIONAL DISTRICT. The committee met on the evening of the sth instant at ,9 o’clock.; • Present—Messrs Tancred (chairman), Bird, Brown, Craig, Harris, Thomson, Thornton, and McNie. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. A letter was read from the Board of Education sanctioning the appointment of Miss Edwards as pupil teacher, the increase of Mr J. Wilkinson’s salary to £BO per annum, and the payment of sundry accounts; also inquiring for details of the outbuilding sand fencing required for the Lincoln road school.
The secretary stated that Mr Farr had supplied the Board with the information asked for at its last meeting.
Applications were read from Messrs W. H. Lane, F. W. Thiel, E. Wheeler, Wm. Hinton, and H. B. Sorenson, for a refund of the amounts paid by them to the collector for the West Christchurch district, on the ground that by a recent decision of the Resident Magistrate they were not liable to pay the rate, having already paid in another district.
It was decided to ask the Board either to give its opinion on the matter or to obtain an opinion from some competent authority before sending a reply to the requests for refund.
A letter was read from the Board forwardin" copy of a memorandum of the inspector as°to teachers being employed in the Lincoln road school who were not sanctioned by the Board, and an explanation of the circumstances was read from Miss Stothard. It was decided to forward Miss Stothard’s letter to the Board, and the secretary was directed to state that the committee rather approved of the plan of allowing intending candidates for pupil teacherships being allowed an occasional opportunity of teaching, Attention was directed by a letter from Mr J. J. Elwin, to the crowded state of the Durham street school, and the secretary was instructed to inform the Board of the matte’’, and to enquire when the Normal school would be finished, also to ask whether the Board would recommend that temporary arrangements should be made for increased school accommodation in that portion of the West Christchurch district. In the matter of the turret clock, Mr Harris stated that the sub-committee had arranged with Mr Sandstein that the decision as to the most suitable material for the dial should rest with the makers, the extra cost, if any, not to exceed the tender more than £7.
Mr Harris also stated that sundry expenses would have to be incurred in connection with the entertainment on the opening of the Lincoln road school, and moved —“ That all such expenses be paid out of the funds in the hands of the committee, in order that the whole of the proceeds of the entertainment might be devoted to the treat to children and prizes,” which was agreed to. The Chairman mentioned that the deputy chairman of the East Christchurch district (Mr Pratt) had suggested to him that the committees of East and West Christchurch, and Lyttelton should jointly employ a drawing master. The committee approved of the suggestion, and appointed the chairman to confer with the other committees on the subject.
The sub-committee for Lincoln Load School were authorised to decide upon the most suitable desks, and the number required for the new buildings, and to call for tenders as early as possible. The school treat was fixed for Friday, the 22nd instant, and the opening of the new schoolrooms for teaching on Monday, the Bth September next. It was decided to hold a special meeting of the committee on Wednesday, the 12th inst, for the purpose of arranging the staff of teachers and other matters. The committee after passing several accounts adjourned. KAIAPOI. The ordinary meeting of this committee was held on Friday last. Present—AH the members except Mr Kerr, Dr Dudley (chairman) presiding. It was stated that Mr Warner, the railway engineer, intended to have the quick hedge near the schools along the railway line, planted as soon as possible. A letter from the Board of Education was read, authorising the expenditure for a wall 200 feet in front of the school, at a cost not exceeding £250, and for painting the roof of the building, and sundry jobs. Mr F. Strouts, architect for the school, attended and handed in plans for desks, platforms, and other furniture which were referred to the Board of Education for approval . The fencing committee reported that they had not been able to get the ground levelled, but expected to have the work in hand forthwith. The committee then adjourned.
