CITY COUNCIL.
Monday, August 10. The usual weekly meeting of the Council was held in the Council, Chamber. Present, His Worship the Mayor, and Crs Lane, Bishop, Gapes, Farr, Ick, Jones, Hobbs, and Calvert.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
The town clerk reported receipts for the week to be as follows —From fate collector, account general city rates, 1874, £154 6s ; Waimakariri, £25 14s 4d; fines from Resident Magistrate’s Court, £3; carrier’s license, 15s; rent of Market place, 7s ; total receipts, £lB4 2s 4d ; drainage account, Dr, £715 Os 3d ; drainage rate account, Or, £593 12s 2d ; wages, &c, to be paid on general account, £333 19s; wages, &c, on drainage account, £69 8s 7d ; overdraft at Bank on general account, £655 4s 9d. The Mayor stated that he had received three Bills from Wellington. One, the Debentures Bill, which had passed its second reading, and would remedy a few errors committed by his predecessors so far as debentures were concerned. A few clerical errors required to be amended, and he would hand the copy to Dr Foster, to telegraph what was required to the hon Mr Richardson ; another was the Hackney Coach Bill, which had been returned by the Lady Bird with the necessary alterations marked on it, and tbisj yvith the Hackney Carriage Amendment Bill, would do all that was required by the Council. [Hear, hear.] The third was a Bill, giving power to Provincial Councils to grant endowments of land to municipalities. His Worship then referred to a remark that had fallen from a member of the Council at the last meeting with reference to work done without instructions from the works committee. '
A discussion followed in which Crs Jones, Gapes, Lane, Farr, Ick, and Sobbs took part, after which the matter was allowed to drop. The city surveyor reported as follows : “ 1. I have set two gangs of men on to the work at Park terrace. The Government sent us a list comprising forty names, but only thirty-three of the men came to the work. One of the gangers that 1 find not adequate to the work will be discharged tonight. “ 2. The work at the new drain between the Ferry road and the outfall is commenced. The works committee recommend that the remainder of the drain from Hancock’s brewery to the South belt should be planked like the northern part of Antigua street, and also that the culvert under the road opposite Hancock’s brewery should be lowered 2ft. “3. The works committee also recommend that as there is so much work in arrear in the city, that five extra men should be put on for a short time.”
The report was adopted. A letter was read from the town clerk to the Dunedin City Council giving information relative to the stonebreakerused by that Council, and enclosing diagram of same. Eeferred to the works committee.
A letter was read from the Thames borough Council, enclosing copy of resolution passed at a sitting of that Council, relative to the extended powers and increased revenue to municipalities, and to.thejforming a Municipal League.' ' '* Ordered to be acknowledged,
A letter was read trom Mr J. G. Hawkes, secretary to the Market-house Company, stating, that at a meeting of the provincial committee it was determined to commence operations for the promotion of the company on the basis of the original agreement entered into with the City Council—that the delay had been caused by the committee waiting to see if it were possible to obtain the extra ten feet width, and requesting that as such delay had been unavoidable that the date for the commencement of the lease might be extended six months from the original date. On the motion of Cr Jones, the letter was referred to the market committee to report upon at next sitting. A letterwas read from Mr E. A. Hargreaves acknowledging receipt of letter rc honorarium for report on bank tenders. A letter was read from the secretary to the Cemetery Board, enclosing one from the secretary to church property trustees, returning memorial from the City Council, and stating that the trustees had no power to give up the land vested in them for a cemetery for any other purpose whatever. A letter was read from Mr Alfred Gee complaining of the nuisance to his customers caused by a neighbor burning leather on his premises, and asking that steps might be taken to abate it.
Referred to the sanitary committee. A letter was read from William Thomas, Dunedin, asking for employment at kerbing or pitching. The town clerk was instructed ,'to reply that there was no opening at present. A letter was read, signed by Mr William Palmer and others, calling attention to the bad state of the North town belt from Manchester street eastward.
The town clerk was instructed to reply that the work would be proceeded with immediately. The following report was read from the lighting committee: — “ The lighting committee beg to report that after consideration of the subject of calling for tenders for the kerosene lamps for the ensuing year, and having before them the letter from the Gas Company relative to the extension of the gas mains, beg to recommend that tenders be not called for until the Gas Company have been communicated with, in order to find out from them the number of the present kerosene lamps they will be willing to extend their mains to. Pending the reply from the Gas Company, the committee have made arrangements with the present contractor to continue his con tract. ; : - . ; ? - , :
“ Appended is the list of the present kerosene lamps, and the committee have marked those which they hope the Gas Company will be able to extend their mains to.
l .“The committee further report that the remainder of the iron lamps to be erected will be ready within the course of a fortnight, these will make an addition of thirtythree new gas lamps for this year.” The report was received, and, on the motion of Cr Jones, it was resolved that the recommendation of the lighting committee be carried out.
;• The inspector’s weekly report was read and approved. A carrier’s license was granted to Offwood, Ferry road.
The Council then adjourned.
