The barque Corredo had a considerable portion of her starboard bulwarks swept away on her passage from Newcastle. Captain Andrew of the Ladybird reports that he saw the expected comet in the S.W. on Wednesday last. Captain Malcolm of the Maori reports, that on Friday last, when off Timaru taking in cargo, a large whale came alongside, and remained there for some time. It appears that even with the present wharfage accommodation there will be little difficulty in keeping the blocks clear when there is plenty of rolling stock. The new arrangements are working well. Last Thursday the Cleopatra discharged 56,000 ft of timber in fifteen working hours, and on Friday the cargo of the Florence, 40,000 ft sawn timber, was got out in nine working hours, and no doubt even this will be improved upon.
