The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company reports : No improvement has been manifested in the demand for preserved meats since the date of our flast circular. For the small quantity which has changed hands a slight decline has been submitted to, as will be seen by subjoined market quotations. Imports have been on a somewhat smaller scale during the past two mouths, but the decrease is not°sufliciently marked to exert any beneficial influence on prices in this country. Present prices current arc : Boiled mutton —Gib tins, 4Jd to 5d per lb ; 41b do, 4Jd to 5d do ; 31b do, 5d to s,jd do ; 21b do, 5-Jd to Gd do. Shipments advised by the mails received since Circular No 84 amount to 14,771 cases. It is stated that a number of live cattle recently imported from the River Plate have been landed in good condition, and, after a few days’ rest and fresh food, have all been sold to Berkshire farmers for store beasts, at an average price of £l6 per head. WOOL. Messrs Miles Bros and CoVeport on June Ist There is certainly an improved state of feeling in the trade since the commencement of the°sales, and all good sound parcels, both washed and in the grease, are firmer, owing principally to foreign support, the French buyers operating very freely, and we do not look for any alteration to the close of the present series. Wasty and faulty description are without alteration, and do not meet with such ready sale. About 203,0001bs have been catalogued up to the present time, of which about 104,0001bs have been withdrawn, and about 90,000 bales still remain for offer. WHEAT AND FLOUR. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company reports on June 2nd : “ Luring the first fortnight in May the temperature was cold, with north-easterly winds and night frosts, but we have not heard of any appreciable harm to the grain crops in consequence, and since then the weather has been unusually warm, and, with the exception of a copious rain, accompanied by a thunderstorm, very dry. Good accounts are received of the growing crops in the United Kingdom, France. Germany, and Russia; but unfavorable reports have come from the South of Spain and Turkey, and from the latter exports of grain have been prohibited. The advices from California are promising, and a general expectation is entertained of good harvests throughout the world, with a consequent fall in values. In the meanwhile stocks are light both here and in Franco, and holders remain firm, hoping to realise present rates, or possibly higher. Shipments on passage to this maiket arc perhaps sufficiently large to prevent much fluctuation in prices until the new crop is avaiable, which will probably be by the middle of August, There has been some demand for wheat cargoes for the Continent, and prices for Californian, Chilian, and Australian afloat have advanced, but on this market quotations ex granary have somewhat declined. Acugo of Australian, in perfect condition, has been sold at the extreme price of 65s 6d nett per 480 lbs c. i. f. for Lublin. Californian has touched Gss Gd nett per oOOIbs c i f, f o r the Continent. New Zealand samples vary in quality and condition, and prices realised range from 58s up to 65s or GGs, There has been a considerable business doing in Australian flour at or near our quotations,
Ti e imports of wheat and flour into the United Kingdom for the first eight months of the present cereal year —viz, from Ist September to 30th April—were 7,934,786 quarters, against 8,550,693 to the same date in 18711, and 6,815,195 to corresponding date in 1872. Deliveries of English wheat for the same periods arc estimated to have been 5,322,297, 5,232,822, and 6,471,438 quarters respectively. Exports of wheat and flour have been 400,460 quarters to 30th April against 430,321 quarters to same date last year, and 503,837 quarters in 1872. Present market quotations are : Australian wheat, 65s to 66s per 496 lbs. New Zealand wheat, 60s to 65s ~ Australian flour, 45s to 47s per 280 lbs. New Zealand, 43a to 45s ~
