MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, July 15. [Before C, C. Bowen, Esq., R.M.] DRUNK AND CREATING A DISTURBANCE. Joseph Coglan was arrested by Constable Smith for being drunk and creating a disturbance, and breaking a pane of glass at the City Hotel the previous day. The barman of the hotel deposed to the man being drunk and breaking the glass. He also refused to leave the bar when asked to do so. Fined 20s, or 48 hours. VAGRANCY. Michael Walsh was charged with this offence. Sergeant Kennedy deposed to arresting the prisoner on the previous day ou this charge. He had for some time past been annoying the officials at the Government offices asking for a passage to Ireland, and did not seem to have any means of living. Mr Callender, charitable aid officer, stated that he had known the accused for about two years. He had been constantly lounging about the Government and Charitable Aid office for a long time past. He had received an order to work at the gardens, and had worked there one day and left. Since then he had applied for aid, and was again offered work, but would not go to it. He (Mr Clalcuder) did not think the man was quite sane, though he was perfectly harmless. Inspector Buckley told the bench that the man had been an inmate of the asylum. His Worship remanded the accused until to-morrow, and instructed that he should be seen in the meantime by two medical men. LUNACY FROM DRINK. Frederick Lilly was charged with this offence.. Inspector Buckley stated to the bench that accused had been remanded by the Resident Magistrate at Kaiapoi to the hospital, but Dr Parkerson could not receive him there, as he learnt that he was very violent, and he had no place to keep such cases. He (the accused) was then sent on to the depot. Sergeant Willis stated that the accused was brought to the depot the previous day. He had been very bad through the night, suffering from delirium tremens. Remanded for a week for medical treatment.
