CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, July 13. (Before C. C. Bowen, Esq., R.M.) DRUNK AND DISORDERLY. The following persons were fined for drunkenness. Andrew McPherson, 10s ; William Evans, 10s ; and James Cox, against whom the.ie had been six convictions for drunkenness, 40s or 48 hours. Thomas Hawkes, arrested by Constable O’Shaunassy, for being drunk and fighting in High street on Sunday, was fined 10s. VIOLENT ASSAULT. Thomas Helms was charged on summons, with violently assaulting his wife, Caroline Helms, on the Bth July, at Prebbleton. Mr Joyut appeared for complainant, and said that about six weeks ago, the complainant obtained a protection order. Defendant shortly after that got into gaol for debt, and on his release he had, notwithstanding this order, broken into the cottage occupied by his wife, and prevented her from earning her livelihood. Mrs Helms stated that since her husband’s release from gaol he had broken into the house through the window at night time after she had gone to bed. He would not leave when requested by her, and through his actions she was unable to earn a livelihood for herself and children. She was afraid of him when in drink, and he had been often in that state lately. He wanted half the furniture, and she told him he might take it. He had not found one farthing towards her support since ho was ordered to do so by the Court. In reply to his Worshiy, the defendaudent said that if a man was sent to Pcbt.eton to obtain his property, viz., his clothes and documents belonging to him he would not again interfere with his wife. His Worship told him that if after this had been done he again molested his wife, it would serious for him, as he (his Worship) had heard a great deal of this matter, and if he again interfered with complainant a warrant would be issued against him. A constable was instructed to proceed to Prebbleton and sec the property mentioned handed to defendant.

Mr Joynt intimated 1o the Bench that he intended to lay an information against the, defendant for payment of the 10s per week ordered to be paid when the parties were last before the Court.
