HBATHCOTE PARISH MEETING.
An adjourned meeting of attendants of St John’s Church, Ferry road, was held in the Woolston Library on Saturday evening at 7.30. Mr Stuckey occupied the chair.
The deputation appointed at the previous meeting to wait upon the incumbent handed in the following report : “The deputation appointed at a meeting of the attendants of St John’s Church, Ferry road, beg to report that their chairman wrote to the incumbent requesting an interview, and received the following letter in reply : “ Heathcote Parsonage, “July Ist, 1874.
“My Dear Sir, —I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter requesting me to appoint a time to receive a deputation from a meeting of the Church members attending St John’s Church.
“ In reply to that letter I beg to state that I cannot recognise the meeting held on Saturday night as a properly constituted meeting of the members of St John’s Church, and I wish it to be distinctly understood that in receiving the gentlemen appointed to act as a deputation, I am simply raieiving four of my parishioners desirous of bringing under my notice certain objections to the present arrangement of the Sunday services of this parish. I shall bo glad to meet you on Friday, July 3rd, at 6 p.m. Should the day or the hour I have fixed be inconvenient, please suggest another that would suit your arrangements better. As the subject you wish to bring under my notice is one on which it is important there should be no misunderstanding, I would ask you to place in writing a statement of your wishes, and of the reasons on which you think they should be complied with; “I am, my dear Sir, “Yours faithfully, “G. J. Cholmondeley. “ S. Stuckey, Esq, Woolston.” It was resolved that the report be received. The chairman stated that it would be well if the gentlemen who waited on the incumbent would explain what had taken place at the interview. Messrs Davis and Clark related to the meeting what explanation the incumbent gave of the present arrangement of the Sunday services, and why the assistant curate had ceased to officiate.
After some little discussion, Mr J. W. Davis moved and Mr Bamford seconded : —“ That the incumbent be requested to call a special meeting of the parishioners at the parish church of St John’s at an early date, to consider the present arrangement of Sunday services and the steps to be taken to procure further church assistance, and that the chairman be requested to forward a copy of this resolution to the incumbent.” A vote of thanks to the chairman closed the meeting.
