BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The Board of Education met yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Present : Messrs C. C. Bowcn (in the chair), G. Gould, Kennaway, A. C. Knight, Inglis, and J. N. Tosswill. WAITOHI FLAT. The Board approved of the plans for school buildings at Waitohi Flat. LP. BON'S BAY. A letter was read from the chairman of the district committee, stating that the committee recommended that Mr Wright's tender (£437) for school buildings should be accepted. A letter was also read from Mr John Smith, complaining that his tender had not i.e< n accepted. The Board decided that they saw no reason to interfere with the committee's decision, and approved of the acceptance of Mr Wright's tender. OXPOBD "WEST. A letter was read from Mr W. McCandlish, stating that he had been elected chairman of the committee, vice Mr Davis, resigned ; also stating tl at they had accepted a tender for school furniture for the sum of £3l. This was thought to be high, but it was the only , tender sent in.
The Board deferred the approval of the tender until an estimate of the cost had been taker. TIMARU. A letter was read from the Tiinaru district school committee, stating that they had purchased three-quarters of an acre of land leading from Theodosia street to the school ground ; £4O had been paid out of the building fund, against which there was the sum of £3O, proceeds of a soiree given in aid of the school, and the committee asked the Board to grant the balance of £'.)o. The Board decided that they could not contribute five-sixths to the purchase of the land, but, as the committee believed the land would be advantageous to the school, the Board would contribute one-half provided the other half was raised by voluntary subscription. Another letter was read, stating that the committee had appointed Miss A. Wright as assistant mistress, at a salary of £SO per annum. The committee proposed to advertise for an assistant master and two male pupil teachers, and an assistant mistress and two female pupil teachers. The Inspector of Schools presented an interim report on the teaching staff of the boys' school. The Board' decided to approve of Miss Wright's appointment, and directed a copy of the report to be sent to the committee, and to draw their attention, as stated in the report, that the head master is only teaching fifteen scholars in average attendance, whilst the second master is overweighted with sixty-one pupils, and the pupil teacher fifty-three, and the third master, a certificated master, is teaching A, B, G, and words of one syllable, to forty-seven infants. The Board wish the report to be considered by the committee before the sfaff is ordered to be increased. The Board also requested the inspector to report on the proposition of the committee for increasing the teaching staff. SOUTHBRIDGE. A letter was read from the chairman of the committee, stating with reference to the report of the assistant-inspector, that the plantations were not properly fenced. The chairman of the committee stated that if the plantations were fenced-iu it would reduce the playground to nothing. The secretary was instructed to inform the committee that the size of the playground must be increased. liANGIORA. A letter was read from the chairman of the committee asking whether the schools could be inspected before the last week in July. Also whether a prize label had been issued for the use of schools. The secretary was directed to state that the inspector would visit the schools as requested. The secretary was also directed to procure prize labels and forward them to the different schools. LYTTELTO^. A letter was read from the committee of the Lyttelton borough schools, stating that the committee were of opinion that the time had arrived for appointing a permanent staff for the schools, and they proposed to advertise for a head master, with a salary of £350, with £SO in lieu of a house, with the option of taking boarders. That Mr Ross be appointed second master at a salary of £250, and £2O in lieu of a house ; Miss Stout, mistress, £IOO, and £2O in lieu of a house; Miss M'Gowau, assistant mistress, £SO ; Mr Phillips, third master, £2OO, and £2O in lieu of a house ; Miss Reston, mistress, £BO ; an assistant mistress, £SO; Miss Hobbs, pupil teacher, £24 ; Miss Pitcaithley, pupil teacher, £l6. The Board decided to approve of the proposition of the committee, excepting that the Board suggested the appointment of two or more pupil teachers in lieu of an assistant mistress.
ST. ALBANS. The Board decided to approve of the acceptance of Messrs Pearcc aud and Reed's tender for completing the school buildings for £655 18s. CHEISTCHURCH WEST. In reply to a letter from the committee of Christchurch West, the Board decided that they would sanction the purchase of a striking clock to be placed in the tower of the Lincoln road school and would contribute one-fourth of the expence provided that the remainder was contributed in the district. RICCARTON. A report from the inspector of schools with reference to teaching staff of the Riccarton school. The report was referred to tile Riccarton committee for their opinion thereon. The Board then adjourned.
