Passengers for Lyttelton—Saloon : Messrs Jordan, White, and Mrs Irwin ; 5 in steerage ; 32 tons cargo. Paris, June 8. The programme of the Left Centre of the Assembly demands the proclamation of the Republic, or a dissolution. It refuses to form an alliance with the Right Centre, unless the latter accepts a definitive Republic. June 10. The proceedings in the Assembly are daily marked by stormy incidents. Gambetta yesterday accused the Ministry of favouring the Bonapaitists, and stigmatised the Bonapartists as wretches, which caused a tumultuous scene. Gambetta refused to retract his expression. Rome, June 10. The Pope has so far recovered that he has resumed his receptions, and yesterday received two hundred American pilgrims. Madrid, June 10. Bight thousand Carlists under Don Alfonso, brother of Don Carlos, were defeated by the Republican troops in the province of Arragon. Galle, June 10. The Pera arrived on the 9th. The Assembly by a majority of 348 to 337 voted the maintenance of the age of electors at twenty-one, thereby defeating the vital clause of the Municipal Bill. Berlin, June 11. The property of Mgr Ledochowski, Archbishop of Posen, has been sequestrated. AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, June 13. The Constitution debate still drags its slow length along, but it will be concluded if possible on Tuesday. It is likely the Government will have a majority of ten on the second reading. Many alterations in committee are likely to bo made. A petition has been lodged against the return of Mr Godfrey for East Bourke. It has been refeired to the elections committee. The three Governments of New South Wales, Queensland, and New Zealand are now agreed on the rate for arrangement for a second cable. Lady Bowen proceeds to England in September. The Governor follows in December or January, to accompany her back. The schooner Lilliau, from Tasmania, was wrecked at the Heads on Thursday. The crew were saved. A fire occurred in the store of Messrs Lange and Thoncman, caused by New Zealand llax. The damage was £IOOO. It was insured. In a libel action against the " Portland Guardian," damages of £SO were awarded. Major Ropata was amongst the passengers from Sydney yesterday. The wreck of the British Admiral was sold for £2150. Arrangements are in progress to save her cargo. In the action Coates v. Council, the plaintiff, a storekeeper at Greymouth, claimed for breach of warranty for supplying preserved milk. The verdict was for the defendants. The markets are very dull. Money is stringent. A late Loudon telegram states that stearine candles and fruits are dearer. Brcadstuffs are unchanged. Wheat, prime, 6s Gd to 6s 7d. Oats are selling freely at 5s 4d for good feeding. Bisquct's brandy has sold for 3d less, and Hennessey's case shows also a reduction. Sugars are not so firm. Devoe's oil is very dull at Is 43d. Sydney. The Challenger, which returned to port, resumed her voyage on Friday, After leaving Auckland she goes East to Japan, and thence across the Pacific.
The debate in reference to the release by the Governor of the bußhranger Gardiner, after severaJ days' continuance, resulted in equal votes. The casting vote of the Speaker alone prevented the resolution disapproving being carried. A serious collision occurred on the Northern railway. Several'passengers were injured. Maketu, June 19. The Government Land Purchase Commissioners in the Bay of Plenty, Messrs Davis and Mitchell, have this day completed negotiations for the purchase of the Puki block near Maketu, containing an area of 30,000 acres of the choicest arable land on this coast. NAriER, June 19. The case Galbraith v. Harding, an action for damages for breach of contract for the sale and delivery of sheep, which was heard at the previous sitting of the Court here, resulted again in a verdict for the plaintiff, but with less damages than at the former trial. The whole case turned on the definition of full-mouthed and broken-mouthed sheep. A verdict of ten was taken for plaintiff ; damages, £IOO. Nelson, June 19. The Governor's yacht ran for shelter yesterday to Astrolabe, where she was seen this morning. Wellington, June 19. There are fifteen entries for the Wellington Derby to be run in December: —Brown's Solitaire; Quinlivan's Maid of Mountain ; Walker's Glcnavery, and ch filly by Traducer out of Policy; Barker's Remnant; Dclamaine's Elfin King; Stevens' Ranakia' Walters' ch filly by Towton out of Symphony; Murphy's Hercules; Emerson's Guy Fawkes ; Watts' Bangi, Tioko, Ngaro, Toi, and Wainui. Flour in full supply, at £l3 to £l3 10s. Wheat, milling, none ; chick, in demand, at 4s 3d. Oats are overstocked, at 4s 5d to ss. Maize is very scarce, at 6s 9d to 7s 3d. Pollard, 8s to 9s; cheese, 6d to 7d ; butter, Is 2d to Is 3d, and scarce ; potatoes, £4 10s to £6 ; bacon, 6d to 7d ; hams, 9d. With regard to the official inquiry into the facts connected with the loss of a seaman on board the Chevert, the AttorneyGeneral gives it as his opinion that the vessel being French, the Customs authorities have no jurisdiction to inquire into the case. The " Tribune " says it learns on good authority there will be no volunteer rifle competition next year, but that Government will instead give more encouragement to rifle competition in the various provinces. Three thousand shares in the New Colonial Bank have been allotted in Wellington. A meeting was held to-day and a provisional committee appointed for its local management. Hokitika, June 19. The Atrato sailed for Lyttelton at 4 p.m. The ship Himalaya, while being towed to sea last night, was caught in a N.E. gale, and slipped the tow line, and dropped her anchor. A sharp shock of an earthquake lasting several seconds was felt at 5.45 this morning. The direction appeared to be east and west. Tauranga, June 20. There has just been found a man who has been lost in the bush for three weeks. He lived on toi toi reeds and leaves. When found, though he was a big man before, he was a mere skeleton, weighing no more than a child four or five years old.
