The Globe. SATURDAY, JUNE 18, 1874.

The question as to whether the Jockey Club shall be allowed to charge foot passengers an entrance fee on admittance to the course is to bo discussed in the Provincial Council. We hope Sir Cracroft Wilson may be able to carry the motion standing in his name, and that the Council will help the Jockey Club in the matter. Canterbury has taken the lead in all racing matters in New Zealand for a considerable number of years, and we trust is not to loose her prestige in this respect; but at the same time it must be admitted that it is by no means so easy to raise the funds necessarj' - for a successful annual meeting as it used to be. The yearly race meeting lure is looked forward to by a very hi: go number of peoplo, and we think that there are very few among them who would grudge the payment of a small sum for admission to the course, more especially when the fee in question would tend fo aid the Club in keeping up the meeting as the premier one of the colony. Before the railway was open, everybody who attended the meeting went by the road, and the income arising from the admission of vehicles to the course formed one of the most important items in the receipts of tho Club ; now, however, for one person who goes by the road fifty go by rail, and the consequence is that the club suffer, as there is nothing received from foot passengers to the course. Tear after year the number of wheeled vehicles on the ground decreases, aud in a short time a drag will be a rarity on the course, and the income which resulted from their admission will have vanished. The income must be revived if possible, and the only way in which this can be done is by charging foot passengers a small entrance fee. We may reasonably look for a larger attendance every year, and the sum which the club we hope will be allowed to charge will not be ruinous to any person who looks for a day's pleasure.
