ROAD BOARDS.

HEATHCOTE. The Board held their usual meeting at the oflice on Thursday, June 11th. Present— Messrs Ness, Attwood, and Mardon. In the absence of Mr J. T. Fisher, Mr Ness was voted to the chair. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed,

The clerk reported that the Provincial Treasurer had paid into the Bank to the Board's credit, re quarry roads, the sum of £645. The clerk had collected and paid into Bank :—Ordinary rates, £54 6a 8d ; Waimakariri, £3 4s 8d ; deposit forfeited, £1 ; and rent of Swing bridge, £l7 18s 4d; total, £76 9s 8d; reducing the overdraft at the Bank to £3 5s Bd.

The following correspondence was read : From the Christchurch City Council, in answer to a letter from the Board, enclosing copy of Mr Jamieson's complaint re drainage on the East town belt. It was decided to defer same for further consideration at next meeting. From the Secretary of Public Works, re free bridge at the Heathcote, stating the question would be submitted to the Executive Council. '■•

From Mr Rainey, in reference to Bamford's road, stating the same is becoming overgrown with gorse. The clerk to acknowledge same, and send gorse notices to residents on the road. From Captain Raymond Brown respecting summons, declining to pay cost of same. From Mr E. Gadd enclosing account'for payment. The Board decided to postpone the matter. From Mr W. Currie calling Board's atten* tion to the dangerous state of the Gasworks road.

Clerk to acknowledge same and forward letter to Heathcote and Spreydon drainage committee, asking their attention to it at once.

Several tenders were then opened, and two accepted ; one for shingling Dryden's road, and the other for Canal reserve road. I . The clerk was instructed to advertise for tenders for 50 yards of screened shingle for Gasworks road and 50 yards ditto for River Avon road ; also to write to the Spreydon Road Board, calling its attention to the bad state of the culvert at the junction of Going's and Colombo roads.

Messrs PaCeman and Norton asked that ) about five chains of road be formed through Lee's swamp. They were requested to get the work done at a cost not exceeding £6. j Mr Heywood requested that about fifteen chains of the Mount Thomas road be . shingled. The clerk was directed to invite tenders for the work. The surveyor was directed to report upon the advisability of putting pipes in the ■ Southbrook stream instead of a bridge near section 1462. A letter from Mr Johnston was received on , behalf of the Rangiora fire committee, asking to be allowed to build the engine-house on the west side of the Boad Board dwellinghouse. The matter was left with the chairman. , Messrs Weston and Edwards offered onethird of the cost if the Board would shingle i the road from the North road to their properties. • The Board decided to have the work done. The surveyor was directed to report about the sand on the North road. Also, to sow some gorse seed by the sides of the road. '. A letter from Mr Leech was received, pointing out the danger of crossing the Cam ' mill bridge, owing to its being so close to the ■ mill. The clerk was directed to give Mr Purvis notice to put up a screen to hide the water- ; wheel. ! The clerk was directed to give Mr Bowie notice to fill up the hollow on the North ! road, caused by the flooding of the Ravenswood millrace. ' Mr Wilson was requested to get the road by the side of the Wooden d school made passable. ' The clerk was instructed to write to Mr J. S. Williams relative to building a bridge, ' and to state that the cost would be about £7 10s. The clerk was directed to write to the president of the Northern Agricultural and ! Pastoral Association, and offer the use of ' the Board office to them. The clerk was instructed to forward a map to the Provincial Secretary, and request him 1 to cause it to be filled up. Mr Chapman asked for a few chains of No. 1 Swamp road to be formed. The surveyor was instructed to take the ' necessary levels, and to report. A letter from the Secretary for Public Works was received, stating that the Wood- " end pound would be gazetted forthwith. 1 A letter from Messrs Duncan and Jameson, on behalf of Mr Patterson, was received. 1 The clerk was directed to reply, and state J tbat a ford would be made across the road at the part complained of. ' A letter from the Secretary for Public 2 Works was received relative to piles for ' Drain road bridge. T A letter from Messrs Duncan and Jamieson 1 on behalf of Mr Lovegrove was received' ? claiming £IOO damages for the flooding of his laud. 1 It was decided to consider the matter at a ; future meeting. A letter from Messrs Smith and Pateman ; and others was received asking for about 7 chains of road to be clayed between sections ; 6555 and 10421. The clerk was instructed to report. A bill from Mr M'Cutchen was received for forming No 3 Swamp road. Its consideration was left till a future meeting. Tenders were received for forming and shingling the Oddfellows' Hall road, shingling Boy's road,and forming the No 3 Swamp roar], and the lowest in each case accepted. The works for which no tenders were received, or for which the tenders were consis dered too high, the clerk was directed to ■ invite fresh tenders for. The clerk handed in his resignation, and i was directed to invite applications for the office. I Accounts amounting to £307 4s lid were passed, and the meeting adjourned.
