The Provincial Council has carried by a large majority a motion affirming the desirableness of the General Government retaining the control of the police. The citizens’ ball to the Governor was attended by over 400 people. Gbahamstown, June 10. The “ Thames Advertiser” has been publishing a series of disclosures about land jobbing, and charged Mr Mackay with buying a large block of country for his own private benefit when acting as agent for the Government for purchasing lands. Mr Mackay has commenced proceedings for libel. The “Advertiser” has declined to retract, and repeats the charges, and says it is prepared to prove them ; also that the land is registered in Mr Mackay’s name. Wellington, June 10. The rates of interest allowed on deposits in the Post Office Savings Banks will be increased on the Ist of July from 4 per cent, to 4J on deposits of £200; from 3t04 on £SOO deposits. At auction to-day 375 Romney Marsh sheep sold at 6s 9d per head, including lambs. THIS DA TS TELEGRAMS. Napier, June 11. A motion for sending the estimates to a Select Committee to revise, was thrown out last night in the Council by 14 to 2. Grbytown, June 11.
A public meeting was held, and a resolution to form ft cottage building company was carried.
