The Globe. THURSDAY, JUNE 11, 1874.

That vote by ballot is a great privilege we are prepared to admit, but that the gentle elector who is helping to send the man of his choice to the Council should a’so be allowed to pelt hia opponent with soot or lime appears to ua to be an anomaly. Councillor Lane seems to think that the Police authorities can grapple with the subject, and we hope they may be able to do so, as at present it is simply an act of daring, to be the proposer or seconder of a candidate at any election. We should like to know Mr W. Wilson’s feelings on this point, having a vivid recollection of his last appearance in the character we speak of. Some years ago there was a meeting in the Town Hall to hear a candidate for the Superintendcncy expound his views; on that occasion the unfortunate speaker’s utterance was drowned for some twenty minutes in a roar of voices; when there came a lull, he repuested the audience to hear him first, and hang him afterwards; and every candidate for either civic or provincial honours must now-a-days have the same courage in facing a crowd of persons, each being an elector, as Mr Lance had then. Hoes having the right to vote, necessarily render a man a howling savage for some twelve hours at a time, because if so, we must protest against any extension of the suffrage. It would appear, from the conduct of a Christchurch'mob at every recent election, that this is what we must prepare to encounter. Let up hope that Councillor Lane’s motion will be acted up to, and that we may be spared the repetition of the disgraceful conduct which has charaterised the latest selections here.
