THE MELBOURNE CUP.
The “Argus ” of June 2nd remarks : —The greatest interest was manifested yesterday afternoon by all racing men, to learn the result of the entry for the Melbourne Cup of 1874. It was known that Mr Bagot had made every effort to produce the list of horses nominated as early as possible, and as only a comparatively small number of horses were expected from Sydney, it was thought that the lists would be out by 5 o’clock. This expectation, however, was not realised, and after 8 o’clock passed, and it was known that the Sydney entries had not arrived, the complaints against the management in the neighboring colony were very strong. As Mr Clibborne is at present in Melbourne, probably that may account for the slowness shown by the people in Sydney, It was fully 9 o’clock before the lists were issued, when it was found that the Melbourne Cup had 79 horses entered, being II less than last year. The Victorian division includes all our best horses, among them being King of the Ring, who is entered in Mr J. Wilson’s name. Of the youngsters, Stockbridge, Persian! colt, and The Hook, are the best known to fame. The three-year olds are well represented. Mr De Mestre has entered Dagworth, Horatio, Gladstone, and a young one. Mr P. Lewis and Mr Coldham have entered four each. Old Strop is again entered for the Cup. Mr Tait sends The Arrow and Rose d’Amour and Goldsbrough. M'Callum Mohr’s name is absent from the list. The Ace of Trumps, which performed so well at the late Adelaide meeting, is also entered. Of those entered 39 are nominated by Victorian owners. New South Wales sends 32. South Australia has sent only three. Tasmania has one, and New Zealand has four nominations. The Maribyrnong Plate has 54 youngsters nominated, being 19 more than last year. New South Wales sends 16 nominations for this race. The two-year old stakes has 43 nominations. For the Ascotvale Stakes there arc 52 nominations, being 24 more than last year. The Derby has the fine entry of 100 youngsters. For the Oaks 37 are entered ; the St. Lcger has 85 nominations ; the Sires’ Produce Stakes (1876) has 84 nominations ; the Marcs’ Produce Stakes (1876) has 98 nominations ; and the Mares’ Produce Stakes (1877) has 255 nominations.
