Volunteer Concert. The Volunteer Concert in aid of the fuuds of the Canterbury Rifle Association, will take place on the 18th inst. This day is peculiarly appropriate, as every one will recollect that it is the anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. We hope nothing will interfere with our volunteers having a most successful entertainment,

Kyreton. —A meeting was held on Thursday evening last at Mr Chilton’s, the Rev R. Bavin in the chair, to determine what should bo done with the £0 .10s now in hand from the sale of half-share in the melodeon, sold to the Episcopalian church committee. After a discussion, it was proposed by Mr Chilton, and carried —“That steps should bo taken towards the erection of a Wesleyan chapel.” Mr J. Moffatt proposed, Mr H. Martin seconded —“That a canvass be made in tbe district for subscriptions,” Carried. On the motion of Mr Beal, a subscription list was then opened, and £sl promised by those present. The following gave their consent to act as members of a building committee— Messrs Moffatt, Beal, Chilton, Martin, Davis, Lavery, and Lord ; Mr Moifatt to be secretary, Mr Beal treasurer. The chairman stated Mr M. Dixon had offered to give the land for a chapel, in a central position. It was resolved that the offer be accepted with thanks. The £9 10s was ordered to be held over towards the purchase of a harmonium; and a meeting will be held shortly to report progress. Christchurch Artillery. The usual weekly parade was held last evening, when there was a fair muster of members. After drill, Lieut. Stausell read the following letter from Licut.-Col. Packe :—“The officer commanding the district was extremely gratified with the attendance and practice of the Christchurch Artillery at Sumner, on the occasion of the district prize firing with shot and shell held there on Tuesday, May 26th. He must compliment the officers, non-com-missioned officers, and members of the battery on the cheerful and orderly manner in which the practice throughout was conducted, notwithstanding the rain, which poured incessantly throughout the day. The firing was remarkably good, notwithstanding the discomfort to which the members of the battery were exposed. Signed, Geo. Packe, Lieut.Colouel, commanding Canterbury district.” The new uniforms (twenty in number) arrived in tbe Northampton on Saturday last, aud are made strictly after the Royal Artillery pattern. The battery is increasing in numbers, and bids fair to be the first corps in Canterbury. Primitive Methodist Church.— The anniversary tea meeting of the Primitive Methodist Church, Cambridge terrace, was held last evening. Tables were provided and plentifully supplied by Mesdames Westbrooke, Lodge, De la Mare, Flavel, Booth, Pearce, Smith, Carter, Edwards, Lewis, and Misses Smithson, Bennetts, and Mariner. A very large number partook of tea, and after the tables hadibccn cleared a public meeting was held, the Rev B. J. Westbrooke presiding. The chairman stated that the debt on the church amounted to £6OO, and after paying the interest on that amount there would only be a balance of £1 in hand. This was, however, exclusive of the proceeds which would be derived from that tea meeting. He trusted in a short time that that amount would be considerably augmented, and hoped they would be in a position to pay £IOO owing to the Rev Mr Ward. The annual report was read, which showed that satisfactory progress had been made by the church during the past year. Addresses were delivered by the Revs A. F. Douglas, S. Macfarlaue, and R. Morton, and after an expression of thanks to the ladies who had prodded the tables, aud to therev. gentlemen who had addressed the meeting, the proceedings were brought to a close with singing and prayer.
