SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

KAIAPOI.

The borough school committee met on Friday evening. Present —All the members, except Messrs Macfarlane, Beswick, and Kev W. W. Willock.

A letter was read from the Board of Education authorising an expenditure for bell and cost of filling in section. The master's returns were read, and it was decided that in future they be made up so as show increase, or decrease in the attendance of each fortnight.

It was resolved that the chairman write to the Board of Education for a reply to the committee's letter as to salary to be paid to a head master.

A letter was read from the Board relative to a complaint made by Mr R. Powrie against Mr Matthews, master No 1 school, for putting his boy out of school for impertinence, and asking the committee to report thereon.

It was resolved " That in consequence of additional information having been forthcoming in re the dispute between Mr Powrie and Mr Matthews, the resolution relative thereto passed at the meeting on May 22nd be rescinded."

Letters from Mr Matthews to Mr Powrie, and the former to the committee, were considered. It was stated in the latter that Mr Matthews wrote to Mr Powrie, informing of his boy's dismissal from school, and that he could return on making an apology for his conduct. The letter handed in showed that the master had not stated that the boy would be taken to school if an apology was made.

It was resolved, " That the committee reaffirm the resolution of the special meeting of May 22nd. finding that P. Powrie was guilty of impertinence, and could not be readmitted unless he apologised to Mr Matthews, but that the committee expressed its disapproval of Mr Matthews's conduct in dismissing the boy without informing his parents that he could be re-admitted upon making an apology, and further that Mr Matthews failed to report the matter to the committee at their next ordinary meeting, and as the committee now discover for the first time that there was a considerable discrepancy between his report to the committee and his communication to the parents. The chairman was desired to send copies of the foregoing resolution to the persons interested. It was resolved "That whenever a teacher considers it requisite under clause 67 of the Education Ordinance to exercise his power of suspension for any cause, that he shall without any delay inform the chairman of the fact; this resolution to be transmitted to both masters."
