CRICKET.

BATTING AVERAGES OF THE C.C.C. (2nd ELEVEN).

Subjoined are the averages of the Christchurch Cricket Club (2nd eleven). This eleven have had an unusually successful season, having played 14 matches, won 10, and lost only 2, in one of which a conquering match was played, resulting in a victory for the Christchurch Cricket Club, they having thus virtually lost but one game. Beeder heads the list with a good average of 19.3, obtained (especialiy latterly) by steady play, tis chief fault being too great an anxiety to make runs at any cost. Pavitt, F. Beard, and Wilson are the only others who obtained double figures. Pavitt has piayed in a few of the latter matches only, and did

so in a manner which showed that his hand had lost none of its cunning. Beard is a new member, in fact nearly unknown in the cricketing chronicles of Christchurch; a position he is not likely to hold long, if he shapes anything like what he has done in the past season. He wants coaching, but lacks not talent. Wilson's position as second in average has been earned more by constant practice than natural ability. Several other members have played for this eleven this year, but are not mentioned, not having played a sufficient number of times, those only being averaged who have played in three matches. We have unfortunately no bowiing averages to hand, but we can safely place C. Frith at the head, with really nobody second, all the rest being but average second eleven.
