OHOKA RACES,.
Stewards—Messrs R. Hopkins, G. Bailey, T. Maltby, J. Clowser, W. King. Judge, B. Dailey ; starter, D, Boyd ; clerk of the course, W. Garnet ; secretary, A. Brown. The residents in this district took steps to arrange for a day’s sports on Whit-Monday, which were duly held on that day, despite the somewhat unpleasant nature of the weather. A sum of a little over £3O had been raised towards the expenses. The events came off in two paddocks near Lewton's Junction hotel. Some of the events were somewhat exciting. Thegreatest good humor prevailed, and in case there had been any disturbance among the sixty or seventy persons who had assembled to see the races, Mr Inspector Barsham and a mounted constable of the police force were present to quell it. The course was a rough one, nevertheless the nags had to go, and there was in it a big bog hole. The committee of stewards were very anxious to carry out the events properly. Mr Lewtou, whose hotel was near, did a spirited trade with the thirsty ones during the day.
