Tho inroads of the “talkies” into the drama of the legitimate stage continues. Last night the curtain rang down finally on drama in one city theatre, with Richard Beliairs, an Australian actor, pleading lor its life in the final scene. Then it rose to display Beliairs in real liie, Making an appeal that Australia s own actors should be given a chance. He denounced the American “talkies” in strong terms and the small audience applauded. The speaker said Lite people v.ero patronising “canned ’ drama to tho detriment of their own fellow citizens. who were trying to give them dean entertainment.. Several shows had closed, throwing hundreds of men and women out of employment. It was not thfcit tho Australian plays were no good, some which had been unable to get » hearing here, were having i'-mg runs abroad.
