Scbafe. ;■ stipendiary steward and liandic.uppcr for the Victorian Athletic League, at a meeting of this body, concerning the administration by trainers of deadly drugs to runners without their know ledge. “This cursed practice”, lie said, “is increasing. The usual method is to .give them a drink before a race. The drink contains a drug which undermines them mentally and physically.” Mr J. Bull, secretary of the league. said cases had come under his notice where sprint runners recent - ed “the needle” under the arm, and where middle-distance runners reeeiv ed “the needle” in their knees. It was decided to hold a searching investigation.
