MYSTERY OF THE SEA
CLEARED UP BY DYING SAILOR. “MARIE CELESTE”- PARALLEL LONDON, Jan. 28. A remarkable parallel to the case of the “Marie Celeste” is disclosed by a story from Berlin. A Norwegian steamer the “Istiennan,” engaged in walrus fishing, was found abandoned off the coast of Norway in 1924. There was no one on board, but a table was set with food and the lamps were alight. The mystery was never cleared up. It was thought the crew had left the vessel for some unknown reason and had been drowned. Now , there has died in hospital at Hamburg a German sailor who confessed. that he boarded the “Istienan” in company with liquor smugglers. A fight ensued the crew were all killed and their bodies thrown overboard. The murderers then preT pared the table and lighted the lamps as a blind.—A. nnd N.Z.C.A.
