(Received Jan. 31, 8.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 31. Two severe explosions, the roar of which was heard four miles away, occurred in sheds at the rear of A. J. Benjamin’s store at C'hatswood. Six persons were hurt, two being in a critical condition. Thirty-one shops had their plate glass windows blown in, and sixteen dwellings had roofs damaged and windows broken. The ceiling of the Methodist Church, fell in, tiles were ripped off the roof, and the memorml stained glass windows were smashed. For five minutes seven streets were swept by a tornado of bricks, sheets of galvanised iron, and blazing sheets en beams, while a- square mile of surrounding country was shaken. The first explosion occurred in a slied in which petrol was stored. The fire then passed to a brick shed containing high explosives. This shed seemed simply to bound bodily into the air. Men working in a street a hundred and fifC- yards away verc hurled off tlieir feet by the concussion.—U.P.A.
