“ROMANCE AND LIES”

“WHISPERING GALLERY” CASE

PEARSON NOT GUILTY OF INTENT TO DEFRAUD! LONDON, Jan. 28. The chairman in summing up in the Hesketh-Pearson case said:The “Whispering Gallery” was like, a great many reminiscences published to-day some' of which were chiefly distinguished by vulgarity, and others by the .lack of veracity, but the jury had not to decide that, nor whether the 4000 purchasers of the book had been defrauded. The real questions were whether Peason falsely represented the manuscripts as Sir Rennell Rockl’s diary and whether Lane’s re-r lied upon this in undertaking the publication. • , _ The defence admitted that Pearson was a romancer who lied continually but was not necessarily a defrauder: that he simply believed he produced something appealing to the modern taste which would bring profit to himself and greater profit to Lane’s. The jury found that Pearson made fnlse representations without intent to defraud.—A. and N.Z.C.A. ,
