KILLED BY FALLING TREE.

DUNEDIN, Jan. 31

Advice was received by the police yesterday afternoon to the effect that Michael Fitzgerald was accidentally killed through a tree falling on him at Tahajkopa.—P.A.

RETIRED FARMER FOUND DEAD

INVERCARGILL, Jan. 31. John Hardwick, single, a retired farmer, aged 63 years, living alone, was found dead on the kitchen floor by a grocer’s assistant who called on his daily round. .He had been in indifferent health for some time, and complained of his heart. No inquest is necessary.—P.A. STOCK DEALER’S DEATH DROVE CAR OVER BANK INTO RIVER WHEN UNCONSCIOUS PAHIATUA, Jan. 31. At the resumed inquest concerning the death of Wm. Thos. Boyd, stock dealer, a number of witnesses gave evidence that deceased complained of feeling unwell"and dizzy. The Coroner said it was very evident that deceased had had some kind of seizure or fainting fit in a car which rendered Inin unconscious and caused the car to go over the bank. A verdict was returned of accidental death through deceased losing consciousness a,nd accidentally driving his car over the bank into the Mangahao river where he was (Downed. —P.A. WOMAN STRUCKBY CAR. AUCKLAND, Jan. 31. Miss Eunice Cbmeskey, 28, alien stepping off the footpath to board a tramoar in Dominion road, was struck by a motor car driven by P. R. McMahon. She was admitted to hospital and her condition is critical. Airs Comeskey was formerly a nurse at the Auckland Hospital.—P.A. CAR CRASHES DOWN BANK. THREE PASSENGERS IN HOSPITAL. WELLINGTON, Jan. 31. A motor lorry returning with a picnic party broke away descending a. hill at Akatarawa yesterday owing to the brakes failing and crashed down the bank. Three of the passengers were admitted to hospital. Mrs. Elizabeth Tapp, 26, suffered severe injuries to her hack, and shock. Her condition is reported as being serious. Walter and Vivian Sireiy received severe abrasions and shock.—P.A. FATAL FALL FROM LORRY STEPS. AUCKLAND, Jan. 31. Francis Joseph Kenny, 24, single, when riding on the ston n. lorry driven by Gerald Flynn between Waipipi and Waiuku, was thrown off as the vehicle rounded a corner. Kenny was seriously injured, and died within few minutes.-—P.A. FATAL COLLAPSE CHRISTCHURCH, .Tan. 31. Stanley Herbert 'Wood, 65 yuus, a retired Customs Officer, collapsed and died at his residence in the city yesterday. It is understood the cause of death was heart failure. —P.A. CAR RUNS -j)O WN BANK CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 31. On Sunday a motor car going from Christchurch to Akaroa .vent over the hank near Duvauehellep Bay. The car ran down thirty feet, when its further progress was stopped by a post, which drove through the flooring of the car. No one was seriously hurt, but the driver, R. Ballanty’ne, received a gash on the flack of the head. Of the four other occupants the only one hurt was a baby, t liicli fell against the exhaust pipe and was burned. Baliantyne was driving near the side of the road, travelling slowly uphill when the hank gave way.— P.A.

WEEK-END FATALITIES. SIN DEATHS IN SYDNEY. SYDNEY, Jan. 31. Week-end accidents in and around Svdney resulted in six deaths and four persons being critically injured. Of the deaths, four were the result of motor accidents, one man fell and fractured his skull, and a jockey, McCurlev, succumbed to injuries. U.P.A. CAUGHT IN THE UNDERTOW CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 31. Caught in the undertow at Sumner this morning, Mrs TJiylor, cf Sumner, had a narrow escape from crowning. She was bathing near the Scarborough end of the beach" when the people on the beach heard her call for help. A swimmer named Mann went out to the woman, who was exhausted and in distress and brought her ashore. She was almost inconscious, but responded to resuscitation tieatment.—P.A. MAN CUTS'HIS THROAT CAMBRIDGE, Jan. 31. George Wilfred Hicks, 52, a single map, residing with his brothers and sisters in Goldsmith street, Learnington committed suicide in the. backyard of his home at about 8.15 o’clock on Sunday night by cutting his throat with a razor. He had not enjoyed good, health, but was in liis usual condition earlier in the evening. No reason is assigned for the act.—P.A. . - -
