GOVERNMENT ASKED TO APPOINT EXPERT COMMITTEE,
HINTS OF DEMONSTRATION DURING ROYAL TOUR.
0 AUCKLAND, Jan., 31. A resolution requesting the Government to appoint an expert committee to discover what effect the stream of immigration has on unemployment and the labor market was Bassed at a meeting of the Auckland nemployment Relief Committee today, Mr A. Spencer, president of the Auckland Employers’ Association, presiding. The committee also decided to obtain official figures from union secretaries of the number of unemployed and to urge local bodies anticipating raising loans, or who have raised loans, to proceed with reproductive works.
Mr Spencer stated there were 568 men on the Labor Department’s books wanting work. Mr E. Phelan said the workers considered the Government should be forced to stop immigration, and it was probable a demonstration would take place during the Duke of York’s tour, hut he hoped such a contingency would not be allowed to happen.—P.A.
