BLACK TOO GOOD FOR VERCOE. BLENHEIM, Jan. 30. A professional bout was held between Percy Black (Wellington) 9.3, and Dick Vereoe (Blenheim) 93, over ten three minute rounds and for a purse of £SO. Black’s clean hitting and excellent footwork enabled him to pile up a heavy margin of points in the earlier rounds. Halfway through it ivas obvious that Vercoe’s only hope lay in the knock out route, but it didn’t come off, although, in the final round, lie had his opponent going. The verdict for Black ivas a popular one. Amongst the amateur bouts, Ger,ld Evatt 11.0, New Zealand light-heavy-weight champion, met Les Hewittson, of Flat Creek 10.10. EDeivittson did remarkably .well though not of his opponent’s calibre, and showed much promise. Stone, 9.9,- a Wellington man with an extraordinary reach, had no difficultly in accounting for Angus Smith (Blenheim) 9.9, ivho could not get to close quarters. Len Turner 11.3, (Flat Creek) met Irvin (Wellington) 10.5. The former’s advantage in iveight and remarkable vigor alloived him to win all the way in a cyclone fight.—P.A.
