BOXING
TOURNAMENT AT TOKOAIARU VERY SUCCESSFUL EVENING (Special to the Times.) TOKOMARU BAY, Jan. 28. The initial tournament of the season under the auspices of the Tokomaru Boxing Association was held in the Te Puke hall this evening before a crowded house. Proceedings opened with a brief address bjy ihe president of the Association, Air I’. 10. Porter, who thanked the patrons for their strong support and interest which was clearly shown by the large number attending. The various bouts resulted as follows : J. McKay 7.10 heat T. Fitzgerald (Riiiatoria) 7.12, on points. In the first round of the lightweight class Kakanui (Tokomaru) 9.12. beat Keenan (Gisborne) 9.13, on points, and Patterson (Gisborne) 9.0, had an easy' victory over Frier (Ruatoria) 9.5. Wakanui was unable to contest the final with Patterson owing to an injury and the latter therefore won by' default. A special bout between Wattic Robertson (Gisborne) 10.0, and A. Buckingham (Te Karaka) 9.13, was won ljy the latter on points in a- close match. After the fourth round, the referee ordered an extra round before giving his decision in favor of Buckingham. In welterweight contests, Livingstone (Gisborne) 10.8, defeated Pokai (Tokomaru) 9.12, on points, and Plank 10.4 defeated Keenan 9.13 on points. ' J. Wright (Gisborne) 11.4, defeat'd Terito (Opotiki) 11.10 on points. A section of the crowd a-pparntly favored the loser. In heavyweight mat-dies, Brant (Gisborne) 12.9 defeated Kaiwai (Ruatoria) on ch ns, and Gil Bar w:ek 11.10 defeated Mahangd Brown (Te Karaka) 13.8, on points. The programme held the crowd interested throughout and exciting exel Auges occasionally brought ahem to their feet. It is pleasing to record that the tournament will prove a success financially.
SCOTT DEFEATS BAIUj'AZZOLO ON FOUL. ITALIAN DISQUALIFIED FOR HITTING LOW. (United Press Assn.—Copyright.) LONDON, Jan. 27. Tlie Albert Hall was crowded for the contest between Scott and Bartazzolo, who is of immense size but who showed the. crudest sense of boxing and was a slow mover. Scott, in the third round, seemed to have his opponent at his mercy, but he contented himself with pushing his opponent off ,though in the fourth round lie shook the Italian w'itk right's to the jaiv. In the fifth Scott had a narrow escape from being floored with a body blow. Bai-tazzolp took a lot of punishment in the sixth, and was disqualified in the seventh for hitting low'. He had obviously had enough and w r as glad to see the end.—A and N.Z. O.A.
EUROPEAN MIDDLE-WEIGHT TITLE. MILLIGAN DEFEATS MOORE. (Received Jan. 28, 11.50 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 27. Tommy Alilligan (holder) beat Ted Aloore, of Plymouth for the European middle-weight championship. Aloore retired in the fourteenth round.—A. and N.Z.O.A. (Received Jan. 28, 9.20 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 28. At the Albert Hall ,the Moore and Milligan fight began with heavy exchanges Alilligan, who w'as faster, punishing Aloore with both hands in the early rounds. Aloore, meamvliile, wms hitting for the body, leaving his face unprotected. He fought pluckily, but Alilligan w'as well ahead on points in the tenth round,, when Aloore having obviously lost, retired. —A. and N.Z.C.A.
