CHASED BY POLICE
SENSATION FOR HOLIDAY ■ CROWDS. POCKETPICKING AT RAND WICK EXCITING INCIDENT AT BONDI BATH. SYDNEY. Jan. 27. The holiday crowds at Rardwiek racecourse and Bond: beach yesterday were provided with unexpected excitement. A racecmrse detective arrested _ a man picking pockets and placed him iu the office while he went for a policeman. The arrestee attacked an attendant and escaped. He was traced to Bondi and was found m a bathing costume on the beach. After a exciting chase owing to the crowds a plainclothes constable cornered him with a revolver. Another surfer, who was dear and dumb, thinking the constable was attacking the man, held the constable and the “wanted" man attempted to wrenc-h awav the revolver, which exploded and shot him. He rushed to a motor-car and told the driver he had injured himself on the rocKS and persuaded him to drive _ to the hospital. En route he seized a rug and covered h:s bathing clothes. ,He then jumped out - and escaped.- ■■ U.P.A.
