AT PANAMA
ENTHUSIASTIC RECEPTION TO DUKE AND DUCHESS. STRICT OFFICIAL PROCEDURE AMERICA AND PANAMA REPUBLIC DUKE’S ESCORT CHANGED ON BOUNDARY (United Press Assn.—Copyright.) A. & N.Z.C.A. Special Correspondent PANAMA, Jan. 26. The Duke and Duchess of Y'ork were received enthusiastically at Cristobal yesterday and came to Panama by train. H.M.S. Renown anchored at Balboa. She will continue the journey / to-morrow. The travellers were honored at a reception at the British Legation at Balboa last night.—A. and N.Z.C.A. (Received Jan. 27, 5.5 p.m.) PANAMA, Jan. 26. Not content with shaking hands with some thousand Panama residents last night, .the Duke and Duchess proceeded to a brilliant hall at the Union Club, at which both had several dances.
To-day, before nine o’clock, they were astir, and inspected an assemblage of various British communities •i Panama, who presented loyal addresses. Thereafter, the Duchess was taken on a motor ride to view old Panama and other points of interest.
The Duke made a round of dutycalls, which in an interesting manner revealed the punctilio obtaining in regard to relations between the Americans and the Panama people. The Rfenown was berthed at tie wharf in American territory, therefore it was necessary that the escort should he furnished by American cavalry through the canal zone. At the boundary iine the American escort was replaced By Panama Cavalry who escorted the Duke to the President’s palace where the first official call was made. Then the Panama escort took His Highness bac-k to the Ixmndary, handing him ever to the American escort, which brought the Royal procession to the Administration buildings, where the Duke called on Colonel M. L. Walker Governor of the Canal Zone.
The final official function during the stay at Panama was a luncheon by the President, at which the Duke and Duchess and the whole staff, and many leading officials and politicians both American and Panaman, were present.—-A. nd N.Z.C.A. TOUR OF NEW ZEALAND. (Special to the Times.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 26. fhe Duke and Duchess of York wifi open their tour of N.Z. at Auc-fcinna on the morning of Tuesday, r ehruarv 22, and will spend two busy days in the city. The Renown is expected in the Harbor at 8.30 a.m., and half an hour later the Governor General and the Prime Minister will go aboard. The Royal Party will then land and the day will be occupied with official welcomes. A demonstration by the school-children, a garden party at the Government House and a civic- ‘‘at home” in the evening will occupy the second day of the visit and that night the Duke and Duchess will leave for Russell in the Renown. The Royal visitors wilt remain in N.Z. until 6.15.a.m. on March 22 when they will sail from Bluff for Australia after having spent exactly 28 days. 9 hours 45 minutes in the Dominion.
