GISBORNE TRAMS

NOT TO BE DISCONTINUED AT PRESENT. CR DECOSTA’S MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. Further discussion on the tramway question ensued last evening at' the fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council, when Cr. DeCosta’s notice of motion came before the Council. The motion, which was seconded by Clr. Coleman, is as follows: “That in view of the decision of the ratepayers to discontinue the tramway service, as declared by the recent poll, the special tramway committee be asked when obtaining the necessary revoking order to take into consideration the question of getting all possible usefulness out of the present system, and with that object in view that the present system should not be dicontinued whilst the cars are running in their present state of efficiency and the tramway account ' s standing in credit; as it is contemplated to have cheap hydro-electric current available in about two years time, it might be advantageous to the ratepayers to consider the' question as to whether it will be better to'instal an up-to-date overhead tramway system or an efficient bus service.” Cr. Burnard said that considering the fact, that the question of the legality of the last poll would not be known till about May he did not see that it would do any harm to support the motion and further consider the question. He, personally, looking at it from an unbiased viewpoint, had already formed a definite opinion, bat as the matter would be hung up in any case for a few months, he did rot see that further consideration would do any harm. Cr. Toneyclitt'c said that the councillors who were “sticking to this confounded thing” were doing the town untold harm. The trams were only serving a minority. Cr. DeCosta: Nonsense! Nonsense 1 The Mayor said that it was a matter of surprise to him that the motion/was going to be supported, but as Cr. Burnard said, as the matter was being hung up for-some months, no harm could be done in further considering the question. The motion was carried unanimously.
