Swinging around a bend on the Taupo roaci one of the wheels of their car collapsed and they were precipitated over a. 'high bank. The machine somersaulted, landing on the hood and it was only. the strength of the stays that saved the motorists from being crushed. Not far behind the party on the road was a car driven, by Mr H. AArmstrong, of Gisborne. He arrived at the scene of the accident just as Mr Hampton had managed to crawl out and, by removing some of the luggage, the two of them were able to extricate the other occupants. All were considerably bruised and shaken and suffering from shock. Mrs Hamptoh, whose arm was thrust through the windscreen,, was fortunate in escaping with minor cuts aaid abrasions. Apart from a smashed hood, a broken wheel, and windscreen, little damage was done to the car. The unlucky motorists , were taken to the Rangitaiki Hotel, which was nearby, and nroceeded later in another car to Gisborne.
