HASTY LEGISLATION
LOCAL MATTERS RUSHED
THROUGH
WELLINGTON, Nov. 1
There was very general condemnation in the House to-day of the manner in which Parliament is asked to deal with local affairs, and there is no doubt whatever that the system is a wrong one, and very liable to abuse. Alembers to-day condemned local bodies for not communicating with them regarding important matters of legislation being brought down and rushed through the House at the last moment. Very often neither members nor ratepayers know what is being proposed and frequently matters of considerable importance that should be introduced by means of local bills duly advertised are slipped through the House in a.* “Washing-up Bill” in the dying hours of the session. The Auckland members espcciadv com- 1 plained to-day that they had not been consulted by the local bodies or the Afinister regarding local leg slation of considerable importance. If tho Government are wise they will alter the system and alter it soon.— Special.
