TAXI-DIUVER BEFORE COURT
ORDERED TO PAY COSTS.
The by-law prohibiting taxi-drivers touting for passengers in the streets' was mentioned in the Police Court yesterday before Air. E. 0. Levvcy, S.AL, when a taxi-driver named Alexander Barclay was prosecuted for touting for passengers for the Show on AYednesday.
Sen'ior-Sergt. Fitzpatriclc stated that the defendant had pulled off the standi and proceeded up Gladstone Road to Peel Street, where lie stopped and invited two ladies to make up his load. .Tliei Magistrate: I suppose taxidrivers do not know the bv-lawP
The Senior-Sergt. : It has* lieen tbe subject of a considerable 'amount of -discussion and at the last meeting of tbe Borough Council it was decided ! to allow cars to stand along Gladstone Road from Customhouse Street i to Reel Street.
The Alagistrate: They are allowed that ? The Senior-Sergt. : \"es. The Alagistrate: In contravention to their own by-laws?
The Senior-Sergt.: Yes; this is the first case under the by-law and it* was brought on quickly in order to give the matter publicity. There are some mitigating circumstances in the case. The Alagistrate said he knew that touting was stopped in the large cities but he had no idea it was objected to in a-place like Gisborne. The defendant wuld be convicted and ordered to pay costs 7s.
