WORKERS-AND PROFITS

NEW SCHEME FOR NEW ZEALAND.

WELLINGTON, Oct. 29. In the Leg’.sative Council, in moving the second reading of the Companies Empowering Bill, Sir F. .Bell said a similar Bill was before the Imperial Parliament last year. The difficulty arose from an unnatural jealousy with which United Labour regarded proposals -which might result in workers’ hours being lengthened and wages reduced or altered from the conditions prescribed in ■ awards. Sir Francis stressed the needs lor approval of the Arbitration Court m the adoption of every scheme of Labour shares. The Bill was Hot compulsory but empowering, enabling coinpanics, by their articles of association, to provide for profit sharing with their employees upon terms restricted in the interests of employees. The result would he to give employees a share in the profits of their work. The Government desired the experiment to bo opened to N.Z. corporate bodies and he believed that such a scheme would have an influence in dissipating the present apparent separation of workers and employers’ interests. It was perhaps only the means by which Capital and Labor could bo brought together. The Bill was put through its final stages.—P.A.
