BOROUGH COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. Tho fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr G. Wildish), and Ors. B. H. DeCosta, F. Collin, H. E. Hill, D. W. Coleman, C. E. Bickford, and TV Todd. The Hospital Board advised that a copy of the Borough Engineer’s report regarding the disposal of the effluent from the water softening plant, and had decided to discharge it into the adjoining fully.—Received. An application for permission to hold a sacred concert after church service in the Opera House on Sunday niglit November 21.—1 t was decided to grant the request subject to the concert not commencing before 8.15 p.m. Referring to the acceptance of their tender for pipes and fittings, Messrs A. and T. Burt wrote stating that the tender stipulated that delivery would he given in approximately four months from October IG.—Received.

An application was received from Mr A. J. Pool asking for his lease or the Borough reserve in Childers road to be renewed for another term of 21 years.—Received. The Borough Engineer reported that tho water reticulation throughout the borough hud been given the usual attention. Two services were laid, one at the post office and the other at Hinaki Street. The laving of pipes in Clarence Street for the extension of the water supply was m progress. The top line had been maintained in working order, and no leaks occurred. The gauge readings were: quantity of water that passed through' the Venturi meter for the weeks ending October 13 and 20 was 4,930,000 and 5,400,000 gallons respectively. Reporting on improvements made at the Repongaere quarry, which was recently taken over by the Borough Council, for the purpose of obtaining metal of the pro pew size for reading work, the Borough Engineer stated that gin and lin screens had been fitted to the crusher screen, and a new sliute for the 2in metal had been fixed. New props for supporting the bins find been purchased and were now being fixed. Timber for subdividing the original 2:n metal bin into Jin and lin metal compartments had been purchased, and the bulkhead would bo constructed in due course. Arrangements were being made to secure camping ground and huts for the men. Tile present houses would lie taken over by the Railway Department when that Department took over the railway from the Public Works Department.
